What's Your Favorite Healthy Food
Thought I'd get the ball rolling in here.
It's hard to pick just one healthy food. For me it would be between canteloupe and a nice, fresh homemade pico de gallo with a squeeze of lime.
Or nice big sea scallops, broiled with a little tiny bit of butter and lemon.
too many to pick from... right now I am all about fresh tomatoes and cucumbers -- I dice them up (usually a whole one of each) and mix them together for a snack. But asparagus ranks right up near the top of any of my lists. And I'll second the scallops -- drool...
Me? I just love food, but fresh fruit and veggies are my absolute favorites (all of them). I could easily become a vegetarian, if I didn't love meat just about as much. ![]()
Cooked foods, I think my absolute favorite is my DH's homemade bean soup. I could eat that every day of the week along with my fresh produce.
May you all be happy, blessed, loved and healthy,
V
Ha! We had scallops 2 times last week! I don't know that they'd be my fav. though. I'm with coach_k on the fresh seasonal stuff right now. Last of the cherries, peaches, tomatoes, corn...corn on the grill...yum. But, yeah, there are way too many healthy foods that I LOVE. ;-)
mmmm peaches....with the juiciness that drips down your chin...
this is the best time of year, if only for the seasonal produce
I was looking at the sodium content on canned soups and even the reduced sodium soups are like through the roof! Clearly it makes sense to make your own soups homemade - maybe in bulk so that you can freeze some for later.
I've been enjoying all the summer vegetables in the farmers market. The tomatoes and sweet corn have been amazing this year. I have lots of a tomato, zucchini and pepper mixture in my freezer to last all winter.
Anything cooked on my George Foreman grill. I LOVE that thing. Right now it's Garlic Chips (elephant garlic works best, slice and grill (or fry in a small amount of oil) until golden brown. yum!) and grilled onion slices.
Safiyah
My all time favourite food is onigiri. Its a Japanese food and its really easy to make. You just take some sticky rice form it into a thick roundish triangle. You can leave it like that, but most onigiri has filling like umeboshi (its a tiny pickled apricot and its my favourite filling) or fish (preferably tuna or salmon). You can add the filling by making a little dip in the center of the rice with your thumb, put in the filling, and then cover it with a little rice.
But most of the time I just go for pre-made onigiri from a store. :D
At the moment... I'm craving boring old boiled potatoes and a good side salad of lettuce, grated carrot, tomatoes, bean sprouts and a bit of mayo.
I know mayonnaise isn't very healthy...
But i use it in moderation and i add vinegar to it to bulk it out a bit more!
That or i make up a vinegrette myself.
greens greens and more greens. i love spinach, collard, mustard, bok choy and so many more. I usually eat them either steamed with a little roasted garlic, or steamed with tomatoes and some coconut milk. I usally throw in some green or red chilis or hot sauce.
I Love Green Salads. Do you think you can eat to much green salads? I always have Fat Free dressings on my salads. At our grocery stores, they have a wonderful salad bar. My husband and I Love to go there for our lunch. There are times I have a salad for lunch and for dinner. (No, that's not the only thing I eat) I have found a salad dressing at Wal-Mart that comes in little indivusual packages. And there is only 25 calories per package. I put them in my purse and when I go out to eat, and they don't have fat free dressings, I pull out my little package. It is made by Kraft. I get the Light Zesty Italian reduced fat dressing. It really has a good flavor too. I like the fact that I can carry the little packages in my purse. I have no problem, pulling them out at a restuarant that doesn't have FF dressing.
I have a sweet tooth and love any type of cake, so because I'm trying to cut out excess sugars from my diet, I thought of doing a sponge using artificial sweetener as well as dried apricot pieces.
I've got all the ingredience now so I'll let you know how it goes! fingers x'ed
well I tried it and it worked out really well, however you I did need to put in a lot of sweetener and some water to get the right consistancy, and it did still work out at 200cal per muffin. Can anyone suggest a good butter / margerine substitute which can be used in baking but has about 1/2 the calories?
I Love Raw Cauliflower!!! MMMMM!!! I remember when I was a kid I was addicted to it, and now as an adult I've become readdicted to it!!! Plus you can't beat it for a healthy snack it is only 25 Calories for a cup!!!
SWEET POTATOES.... these things are so good for you. So much fibre and good carbs. The flavor is so intense, you don't need to add butter or salt or pepper. Baked in the oven is best... skin and all. OR, Sweet Potato fries with a little chipotle seasoning... yumm
FIBER 1 COTTAGE CHEESE WITH FRIUT OR FRESH SALSA (FROM PRODUCE SECTION) This has become my favorite breakfast, lunch or snack, depending what flavor I add. And I feel good about the extra daily fiber. I am open to other ideas of things that I can mix with it.
