i was just wondering, for all you people out there trying to gain (especially people recovering from eds), what bmi are you aiming for? I know that generally 20-25 is considered the 'healthy range' but just out of interest, what have you set as your 'goal bmi'?
The BMI for someone recovering from anorexia should be 20 or higher. This is because it prevents the temptation of relapse - being lower than this and it's easy for a disordered mind to twig and go "Oh, I could go down just a little" and it downward spirals. It also prevents you falling into the underweight range if you fall ill.
Really, 20 is a good one to aim for for ANYONE gaining weight because of these reasons but most of the time, people who want to gain for health and non-ED related reasons don't have an issue with making that number.
thanks for replying
I was guessing that most people on here would be aiming for about a bmi of maybe 20 or 21, I was just interested to see how it varied between different people who were recovering. Is anyone on here aiming for something higher than that, like maybe a bmi of 23 or 24? I know that anywhere between 20 and 25 is healthy, but it obviously varies according to different people (especially coz of different builds, muscle, etc).
I still dont know what Im aiming for in the long run, Im just trying to focus on gaining in general for now.. I guess ill decide later at what point Ill stop and try to maintain.
Most likely. I know agruskin had a BMI goal of about 22 (and was happy to go slightly higher). Others may too.
And yes, don't think so much on maintainance until you're done gaining. Aim for at least 20, and then if you feel you could go a bit higher or would look better at a slightly higher weight still, then that's up to you.
I'm recovering from anorexia and my goal bmi is 19 [I didn't choose it, my paediatrition did]. I know that most people have a higher goal but I'm only 15 and have always been petite so its the right weight for me
My nutritionist must not know this 20 BMI rule because she wants our weight goal to be at least 115... which is a BMI of 18.6
Is there something funky about that?
She is probably giving you an initial weight. My clinic would give goals building up to a BMI of 20. Note the "at least".
my goal bmi is about 19 or so. my natural weight before/between eating disorders was borderline underweight and i am small-framed. my doctor says we'll see how i feel and how my body reacts to determine if my set point has changed. i'd have no problem at all gaining to 20 or so like it's suggested. i just want to be healthy.
My BMI before anorexia was on the low side (19 or 20), so I'm just aiming to get back to that! That way, I know I'll have room to grow once I start maintaining. Sometimes I worry that I won't be able to maintain, but from what I've heard, every person's body has a "happy weight", and it'll start to settle there eventually! At least I'm hoping this is true!
i was originally told (at 14 years old and what i thought was 163cm) "at least 55, "preferrably" 56, 57. Now 15 and correctly measured at 166cm, im 58.
the original goal was a BMI of 21, but with different measurements, it still is 21 though.
Almost everyone has a goal in the 20's... why would my clinic set a final goal of 17.5?
that doesn't make any sense! anything under 18.5 is considered underweight. I am at around 17 now and my doctor wants me at 20, or 19 at the least. I would definitely recheck that, wistfulxthinking, just to make sure you get back to a healthy weight!
That's what I was thinking. I was kind of like.. "That's.. it?". I was just told to get to 100 lbs. and that was 'good'. =/ I'm thinking I'll shoot a little higher.
how tall are you? I am 5'6" and female and I am supposed to be at LEAST 120! at the very least. 100 seems low, even if you are shorter. There are lots of BMI calculators online that will calculate what your healthy range is based on age, height, etc. I'd plug in your info and see what it comes up with for you!
5'5". I hope he was just over tired today and meant to say 18.5. :P
