From http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/DummiesArticl e/Lowering-Your-Salt-Intake.id-1533.html

The recommendation for salt in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as well as the American Heart Association is 2,400 milligrams (mg) daily for adults. This is the amount in 1 teaspoon of salt (2,300 mg to be exact). The average American consumes 5,000 mg of salt daily -- twice the necessary amount. Normal salt balance can be maintained with 500 mg daily (or a little more than one-fourth teaspoon of salt), so Americans are eating ten times as much as they really need. Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Portugal all have about the same recommendation of 2,400 mg of salt. Some countries, such as Germany (4,000 mg), the Netherlands (3,600 mg) and Belgium (3,500 mg), are more liberal and at least one country, Sweden (800 mg), is more restrictive than the United States.

I hope this helps.

Salt is bad. I try to consume as little as possible..

I bloat up when I do..

To keep salt intake under 2400 mg/day you really have to read nutrition labels and not eat many processed or commercially-prepared foods.

Soups, while frequently low fat and nutritious, are often highly salted.  So are deli meats and salad dressings.

Keep your daily salt intake under 1500mg a day to prevent water weight gain See (Removed) to see why U need to keep salt intake lo

You do need some salt in your diet to survive, so don't afraid of eating some of it.  Typically the US government doesn't list a minimum requirement because the average american would have to work really hard to eliminate it from their diet.
I've heard 500 mg is the min a person should go, which would be almost impossible.

I have high BP and would like to stick to 1,000 mg daily, but always go over.
1500 mg optimal per day. only o as low as 500mg when you have an event to go to in a faw days
