What's a good pre work out snack?

Quote  |  Reply
... apart from a banana that is (ick!)

I usually head to the gym after work and work out for an hour (from about 7pm ? 8pm). If I don?t eat at about 5pm I?m (a) starved when I get home and (b) too hungry to really push myself on my workout.

Sooo ? any ideas?

I grab a handful of almonds before I go and that seems to take the edge off.
I have a vitamin water.  It nourishes me enough to get me through the workout.  I don't know if it's a good choice, but that's what I've been doing if I'm so starved that I consider not going to the gym...

I'd be interested to hear other suggestions...
A Yoghurt drink.
a nutritionist came to talk to my college crew and she recommended eating something small that won't just sit in your stomach to get an energy boost right before workouts.  her recommendations for us before practice or races were a shot of honey or 2 tablespoons of peanut butter.  she said the calories don't really stick because of the liquidity of the food and it tends to be burned and go right through your system.  then she also said to eat something within fifteen minutes after working out, such as a granola bar or some nuts or cereal.  she said if you wait to replenish your body, your muscles don't benefit from the exercise as greatly.
