What's the harm??

Quote  |  Reply

So I do tend to stick with a low fat diet, only because the majority of my diet is made up of vegetables, i love my veggies

anyway, I sorta ate more today, I wouldn't say binge, just like a normal person who does not calorie count. I must say it was nice haha, but I really only had one bad meal, which was not horrible (vegetable chow fun and some crispy noodles, not too many!)

but I ate a crap load of almonds and honey roasted peanuts. I'm not going crazy about eating a lot, but are almonds and peanuts bad if u eat too many in one day? Like I know they are kinda high in cals and fat, and as much as i LOVE nuts, I stay away from them because they are so high in those areas.

But they are good fat and caloriess right?

they are good fats indeed, you know you dont need to cut them out of your diet completely, you can eat as many as 8 of any nut as a snack and they will send a hormone to your brain telling you, that your full.. so if you feel peekish have 8 nuts and consider them a helping treat

ps just dont scoff them lol and try stay away from sulted nuts..Laughing

hmm i wish those 8 nuts tell me brain sooner I'm full!! I bought the 100 calorie pack of almonds since I have trouble stopping at a handful, but today I was with my boyfriend and his family owns a little chinese take out place and theres a zillion nuts to choose from and today I couldnt resist! lol

mmmm honey roasted nuts! I avoid these as much as possible cos I really like 'em :)

As you say, they are good fats. I read that in a study nuts proved to help lose more weight on average then those who didn't have nuts as part of their diet.

If you eat a handful it actually does stave off hunger. Unfortunately for me, I can't eat just a handful - well I'm not as bad as I used to be.

I agree with the others, don't cut them out completely out of your diet.

Any diet, even for weight loss, needs to incorporate some amount of fat, and fat can be beneficial to weight loss:

If you don't mind me asking, what are your stats/calorie intake?

If you were craving them, it's possible your body is starved for fat.  Like hailtothethief said, fats are important to your diet, and the fats in almonds and other nuts are good fats.  Other good fats are in olive oil and avocados and fish.

Also, if you're high in fiber (which you might be if you eat that many veggies), your body will have a hard time processing it if you're too low in fat, and you'll end up constipated.

So, I wouldn't worry about eating too many nuts in one day, but I would review your carb/fat/fiber and make sure you're getting enough of each.

Thanks everyone! I really think it is because I do not eat enough fat, not on purpose or anything but I tend just to eat lots a foods that are very low in fat.

I'm 19, 5'8 and right now 115 pounds. I eat normally about 1300-1400 calories a day. I'm trying to maintain now. My doctor told me anyway that I need more fat (I'm always cold and what not and my hands have been really dry :( ) so i am trying to incorporate those healthy fats more, so I guess nuts are the way to go? lol I'm just afraid I'll always eat too many!!!

Another good source of Healthy Vegan fat is from AVACODOS... So good, and at 300 calories for a medium their a good filling snack.

whats the best way to eat avacodos?

I just love them with a little salt.  You can easily toss them on a sandwhich, in rice with soy, or in a salad.  when they are Ripe the skin is dark almost black and they are firm but alittle soft... don't squeeze to hard you're thum will make a bruise.

They almost have a buttery/savory taste... They go well with strong spices like salsa and peppers.

ill definitely have to try them!! thanks!! :)

If you're 5'8 and 115 pounds, that puts you at a BMI of 17.5, which is classified as underweight.  Shouldn't you be looking to gain, instead of maintain?  The physical symptoms you described - feeling cold, dry hands - are all signs of being malnourished and underweight.

To answer your question, "what's the harm?" there is a lot of harm that comes from being underweight: osteoporosis, infertility, etc, etc, worst case scenario: heart attack and/or death.  I know; I've been there myself and I'm still paying for it today.

I'm not a mod, but remember CC's rules:

Calorie Count's mission is to promote healthy and sustainable weight management. Please help our moderators follow this vision and respect the following guidelines.

  • Promotion of starvation diets or habits that exhibit signs of an eating disorder ("pro-ana", "pro-mia", etc.) is prohibited.

At age 19, 1300-1400 calories is WAY too low - even if you were trying to lose weight that would be too low for you, but to maintain, you should be eating a lot more.

You are actually underweight at a bmi of 17.5 and should probably be eating about 2000 cals a day.  Has your doctor addressed your weight at all?  No wonder you're cold all the time!

He addressed the issue by giving me anti-depressants to stop caring so much about counting calories. I guess I'm still in that whole denial "i dont need help stage"

Currently I'm seeking a therapist, I'd rather not take anti-depressants.

I know I should be trying to gain weight, its just a little hard right now, but I do eat!! I'm trying a little more each day

I suggest you listen to your doctors and take steps at the rate THEY suggest.  Starting with upping your healthy fat intake.

Steping away from an eating disorder can take years without proper medical an advice.  Trying to push to hard for recovery is a good way to relapse, take your time and keep your chin up.

I'm definitely listening to him about the fat intake,  anti-depressants I'm just worried about the negative side effects and I'm not too thrilled with the idea of pills :-/

eh I wouldn't worry about the anti-depressents... it probobly wont be a forever thing, but they are important in your recovery.

I wish you all the best in your journey. I agree with the previous posters, you are most definitely underweight.

You need to get a handle on why you have an unhealthy relationship with eating. Would you consider seeing a counsellor? The good ones can usually get to the heart of why you are feeling what you're feeling.

Again..all the best.
