I bring my lunch every day to work. What's the best sandwich bread (healthiest)? I either bring turkey/chicken and lite swiss cheese with mustard and veggies or tuna.
Anything whole grain. Look for breads made with 100% whole grain of your choice with low sugar added.
I usually do not have bread but I love the Mission Whole Wheat tortilla for my sandwiches. One tortilla is only 80 calories and it packs 8 grams of fiber. You can fill them with just about anything and roll it up. Travels really well too!
I love The Baker's Bran Bread or Flax Bread. 50 cal, 3g of fiber, 5g protein per slice. It's dense and very filling, unlike many of the "light" breads, which are really just regular bread cut super thin and with holes. All of The Baker foods are whole grain, organic, and preservative free as well! If they don't sell it at your local grocery store, they actually sell it at Target.
They also make a delicious cranberry and pumpkinseed bread called "Yoga Bread" that is a mystifying 70 calories per slice. I couldn't live without it.

I use La Tortilla factory 6" soft tortillas. only 50calories and 8g of fiber. So all my lunch sandwiches have turned into wraps.
I found that Nature's Own brand 100% wheat bread only has 50 calories per slice. It tastes good and about half the calories of other brands I looked at.
I like Nature's Own Double Fiber 100% Whole Wheat - 5 grams of fiber per slice.
I like Healthy Way Organic breads - there are a few different kinds, all are good :-) usually my safeway has 100% whole wheat, and a mixed grain one.
I do mostly whole wheat tortillas too or whole wheat pita pockets. Anything that packs fiber!
I like Nature's Own Whitewheat, which is a whole wheat bread made from a low-tannin wheat, so it looks and tastes like white bread.
Even my nearly-2 and 4yo love it.
50 cal per slice!! and 5 g fiber per 2 slices!
It's higher in iron and calcium than ordinary bread also
.4 mg iron and 40mg calcium per slice.
No trans fats either.
It's widely available at least in the eastern US, I can get it in any chain grocery, and also at Sam's club. It has a distinctive red/white/blue bag.
In fact, I bought 2 loaved this morning, it was on sale for 1.39
The only downside is that it isn't in the database here -- I fudge and put the nature's own whole wheat down.

ive been getting the weight watchers wheat bread...only 50 calories a slice. i dont know if this is the best bread out there but i really dont like the really dense breads like the baker's because they over power the taste of my sandwiches sometimes.
I would have to say Weight Watchers whole grain. It has 90 cal for 2 slices, 1g. fat, 17g. carbs and 4g. fiber. I've eaten many different varieties of breads but this one is my favorite and to me the healthiest.

Stone ground whole wheat bread has the lowest glycemic index - it's ground coarser so it's digested more slowly. That should be useful, but I don't happen to like any that I've tried - it's too heavy. I use multigrain myself, and buy a kind that comes in a smaller loaf, sliced thinner. That way the slices weigh less - about 30 grams (one ounce).
I second the Nature's Own! I have the Honey Wheat Light... 40 cals a slice and it's great!

I like WhiteWheat too. I can't eat regular wheat bread, it gets stuck in my throat and I usually feel like throwing up. The whitewheat helps me out a lot.

I generally just eat the cheapest 100% whole wheat bread. Aldi's isn't too bad and cheap is good since I'm a pooooooor college student.
I've been using mini whole wheat pitas for sandwiches. I split and stuff them. It's a lot less bread than two slices. I get my whole grains and fiber mostly from cereal so I'm not as concerned about getting it in a sandwich.
I do oat bran pita's now.. they are really good for you so I don't mind the 130 calories...
anything with 100% whole grain is good. If you have a hard time with wholegrains , the white wheat make a good subsititute. For those with gluten problems, or who want someting different, sprouted grain breads (look in the freeze of the health food section) or hemp or flax breads are also good.
My favorite when I can get it is Great Harvest. They are pricier but they grind thier grain fresh daily and the bread has a very short ingredient list, flour, sugar, water, yeast and a pinch of salt. It is fresh baked all day long. They also make many other treats. However the lack of preservatives also means it has an extremely short shelf life. At the grocery store I just read the labels until I find one with the most fiber and the fewest ingredients, and one that has no corn syrup (especially high fructose corn syrup), as I've started to return to my fussy, picky heathy ways. Usually I buy Villiage Hearth, they also make a great 100%ww bagel, but I have a feeling they may be a local brand.
If you are really brave and/or have the time, baking your own is also a great way to control what goes into your bread. I've used the white whole wheat flour to make cookies and bread chicken and many other uses. It tastes close enough to white to fool my son much of the time.

Why eat bread? Use a lettuce leaf and make a wrap. Works great and far less carbs. Give it a try. Not sure eating bread, even high fiber, everyday is such a good idea.
I also take my lunch every day. I have a soft side cooler I pack with all kinds of things and with an ice pack it keeps it cool all day. I have salad, fruit, fat free milk, whatever I would have if I were home. At the end of the day I have a cooler full of empty containers and silverware. The liner of the cooler comes out and everything goes in the dishwasher.
It good you are looking for healthy choices. Keep up the good work.
