What's the low-cal food that fills you up the most??

Quote  |  Reply

I know about vegetables (but can only eat so many).  I just recently found egg-beaters and WOW love how much of that I can eat for so few calories!  What foods do you like to eat b/c you can eat a lot of them for not too many calories???

fruit.

strawberries, grapes, watermelon, everything :)

I know you said you can only eat so many veggies, but I have found that if I steam broccolio to a very, very tender point that I can eat it like candy!

I eat a lot of Fiber one (Original). One whole cup of this high fiber cereal is only 120 cals, and being high fiber its very filling. Put a half cup of Silk brand LIGHT vanilla soymilk on top and it's only 160 cals. A teaspoon of splenda (brown sugar blend or regular) and it's still only 180 calories! Plus I like old fashioned oatmeal, few ounces of the soymilk and some Splenda brown sugar blend ......200 cals, also filling. I'm kinda a cereal freak too by the way. LOVE cereal! Love breakfast food in general but I haven't been able to put together a plate of eggs, sausage and french toast yet that was low in cals, unfortunately :(

soup. anything hot. there are a lot of soups that are 90-110 calories a cup and since they are warm they give you a full feeling.

  • raw veggies sticks: carrots, peppers, broccoli, fennel...
  • steamed brocoli- for some reason it fills me up quicker than steamed carrots
  • strawberries, cherries, grapes, oranges
  • oatmeal (1/3 cup raw oats, 1tbsp bran 1/2tsp vanilla extract or cinamon, 2/3 cups water) keeps me going from 7am to midday easily!
  • eggwhite omelette with mushrooms and spinach (2 eggwhites- whisk till they are stiff.... sautée a 1/2 onion, add 1 cup button mushrooms sliced - cook for a few minutes, add 1 cup baby spinach. Pour egg whites over and cook like a normal omelette till set... season to taste.

about the eggs, sausage, and french toast... i know there are lean turkey sausages that my mom would buy at giant eagle (dont know if there are any by you) and cooked they were 130 cal. eggs, you could make out of egg beaters for like 60 calories? and then make french toast with egg whites, milk, and a teeny bit of margarine. that would be a lot of food for only like 300 cal

Thanks for the good ideas!  I want to try that omlet.  I don't know about the fiber one / all the veggies - I LOVE them, don't get me wrong, but for some reason my system can't really handle all that fiber...little embarrassing haha.

Well, of course most veggies.  But a couple I discovered recently:  canteloupe and honeydew melon.  I'd forgotten how much I like them, but when I got a few really good melons recently, I discovered that it doesn't take a lot to take up a lot of room in my stomach for so little cals.  It's been my snack of choice lately.

OATMEAL, with mashed bananas, cinnamon, and splenda in it

To keep me from wolfing down cereal or ice cream I have come to love celery and hummus. Oh, also the Wasa light rye crackers. Only 30 cals a piece and with a tsp. of jelly tastes really good.

I ate a shaved turkey sandwhich with low fat swiss on whole wheat. All i added was mustard and pickles, and I was full till dinner. I ate this for breakfast. I think the calories came in just under 300.

Popcorn!  It's low in calories, high in fiber, and is a great snack option.

I just ate 3 pieces of California sushi roll and I'm really full, it was only 150 calories (I bought a case on sale at the store).

lots of fruits, and if you can freeze it they'll take even longer to eat (grapes, bananas, etc), a medium apple heated with some splenda and cinnamon.

oh! and my new favorite thing is making plain oatmeal (i just buy the instant packs, 100 cals), then mixing in a packet of the swiss miss diet hot chocolate (25 cals, i'm sure you could do this with cocoa powder too if you wanted), and a tbsp of PB2 (27 cals). it comes in at 152 calories and it keeps me full for awhile. it reminds me of a Reese's cup. mmmm

Although what most replies have given you are good tips, i do believe fruits and certain vegetables are very High in sugar! So what I would suggest,  trying to incorporate more Lean Meats and proteins into your diet.. Have you tried Black Beans? They are an excellent source of fiber but offer protein as well, chicken, lean turkey, lean beef, Pork tenderloin, all very delicious. Also someone else had mentioned Egg beaters, they are delicious and you can add salsa, cheese and even meats to them.

Another thing that is truely delicious, cut a grapefruit in half sprinkle with nutmeg, cinnamon, and splenda and bake in the oven for about 10 minutes at 350 degrees. This is a wonderful treat. Enjoy!!

What is PB2 and why is it so low calorie???

I pretty much NEVER feel full unless I have an insane volume of food... but I recently tried canned pumpkin and WOW I was fulllllll.

You must try Chayote boiled with no salt. 38 calories! it tastes real good with chicken on the side and some salad with extra virgin olive oil. Every time I eat one, I'm well satiated until my next meal.

1 - Radishes!  There are so, so low-cal and loaded with water and the "spicy hotness" fills you.

2 - WATERMELON!!!

I just tried "cauliflower popcorn" and I feel completely stuffed after barely 1/3 of a cup! Too bad all my low-calorie snacks fall in the vegetable category, like raw sweetpotato, tomatos, radishes.. my advice is: learn to love veggies. Give your taste buds a chance to explore the flavors by maybe cutting some stronger foods out of your diet for a while, especially paying attention to salt. I don't even own oil or salt, so for my palate something simple like a tomato is a symphony of flavours, whereas someone accustomed to a saltier diet would find it completely bland.

Nuts are great too, not exactly what one could call low-calorie but the quality replaces the quantity. If nothing else helps, drink some more water to ensure your craving for snacking isn't due to dehydration.

Fried Zucchini, I can eat a plate of it for lunch at around 75 calories (including the olive oil I fry it with)
