What's the scoop on poop?

Quote  |  Reply

I just ordered the as seen on tv "Dual action Cleanse" for a healthier digestive tract. I have IBS with constipation. Anyway, I'm just wondering if a healthy digestive system aids in weight loss and if anyone on here has had success with it?

It definitely helps, but you don't need supplements. Your body does a great job of cleaning itself out when you get enough fiber in your diet.  Also, from what I've heard and read, probiotics are great for keeping you regular as well.

I disagree. My GI doctor, who has run every test possible on me, told me DO NOT increase my fiber because I already have issues with trapped intestinal gas which causes bad cramping.

Anyway, my ques was directed towards weight loss not health.

Quinoa is great for cleaning you out.  Make sure that you are not around people for about two days though.  The first two days I had the worst gas ever, then when it cleaned itself it, I was fine.  I have a bit of IBS and the quinoa helps with it.
Quinoa also changes the consistency and colour of your BM's.  It is also much cheaper and safer then a chemical cleanse.
And you won't increase your fibre because you use it in place of your other starches.

PS weight loss is just a part of good health.  Good health is more important in the overall picture.

SPOILED CANDY-hi, how do u make/eat the quinoa, ive tried it and was not very fond of it but would like to give it another shot.

thanks

My magic bullet for IBS problems is ground flax. (I have a good reciepe for a quick and easy flax muffin if you want) That and knowing that your body can only digest a certain amount of carbs at one sitting (about 300 calories for me) before I start becoming gassy so you may want to look at what else you're eating even if it's healthy foods it may be causing the gas. Also, leafy greans like spinach can also cause gas if you eat too much.

SYBIL-hi, what does flax do?

thanks

Flax is a high fiber seed a bit like psyillium husks, but IMO flax is better because it also works to calm inflamation. If you are constipated it will make you go, I had the opposite problem and it helped a lot as well (I was already eating a lot of traditional fiber fixes like metamucil, but none of it worked).

As an added bonus, flax expands when it gets wet, so it's incredibly filling as well.

I've recommened flax to a friend who's husband was developing Chrone's disease and it worked for him too.

How is ground flax sold+where?  i recently began using wheat bran.  metamucil doesnt work for me either.  other than baking, how/where else do i use flax?

thanks!

Flax seeds are really similar in size shape to sesame, just a bit darker - you can bake with ground flax sprinkle it in sauces  etc, whole flax seeds are pretty tossed ontop of salads or sprinkled ontop of rice or pasta dishes.  It really doesn't have much flavour so put it in anything.

I keep flax seed on my desk at work and put a few spoon fulls on top of whatever im eating (yogurt, cereal, rice dishes, etc) its very versitile.

I have IBS as well, my trigger foods almost all have to deal with milk and milk bi-products. So I added a little amount of extra fibre-sure into my bi-daily smoothie as well as chia seeds and soy milk (a healthy dose of fiber) and noticed I could now 'fight off' the crippling attacks.

Now it probably wont work for everyone, after all each person is different and IBS really is just a term meaning We Don't Know What's Wrong. It's a blanket term most of the time and it's up to you to do basic research and ask your doctor. I asked mine if adding a small amount of fiber would be okay and he said for me to test it for a week and if it was okay then I'd be able to practice this long term.

Flax really is amazing. I use it all the time!

I buy mine ground, and put it in smoothies, or sometimes with yogurt. It has kind of a nutty flavor. Really helps keeping things regular:D

i just bought wheat bran for the same reason, i have IBS-C, but maybe i confused the wheat bran w/flax?? lol woops, i dk now

I will def try the Flax. Where do you buy it? I've seen the oil at Kroger but also noticed it's fat content is super high. Do those of you who are trying to lose weight avoid the oil?

Anyway, the ques. I was really trying to ask in the beginning when I posted this was rather or not having a healthy digestive system/reg BM's daily help with weight loss. And not as much as to how you guys are getting those BM's. Can anybody tell me if "going" regularly aids in weight loss? And how?

Having a healthy digestive tract means that you will have more energy.
Having more energy means that you will move more.
Moving more means that your body will burn calories.
Burning calories will help to release your fat.

Face it, if you are doubling over with cramps from IBS, you really don't want to exercise.  All your energy is being used just to recover from going to the toilet.  I have had days where having an episode of IBS, I am just so tired afterwards that I don't really want to do anything but curl up in a ball in bed and just don't want to function as a person at all.  It just wears me out.
Eating healthier and eating foods that are not irritating to my bowels is essential to my leading a productive life.

I make quinoa like I make rice. Wash it really well as quinoa has a coating which is not good for you, Boil it well with or without salt till you see a translucent ring around the grain. Drain it and let it sit for about 10 mins.

Use it in dishes as you would rice.

If you have a Trader Joe's nearby, you can get both quinoa and flax!

LSAMI-thanks!  im hoping to eventually try it as a hot bfast since i dont digets oats that well.

Your original question was "I'm just wondering if a healthy digestive system aids in weight loss and if anyone on here has had success with it? Constipation makes you cranky...

the solution: loads of water, coffee, papaya, and alcohol.

And of course it helps you lose weight..poo weighs a lot!

All that you need to do for a healthy digestive tract is to eat a well balanced, high fiber diet.  All that other stuff is not needed.  Don't waste your money.  Your digestive tract has nothing to do with weight gain or loss.  That's determined by how many calories you eat vs how many you burn.

Of course this doesn't apply to anyone under a doctor's care - in that case you'd follow your doctor's orders.

I get my flax seed at publix.
