Whats your weather like? can the animals tell us??

Quote  |  Reply
Ok its cold here and the birds are flying around like its a July Morning!  Its freaky!  There are like 100 little birds flying all over my yard!  I just counted 8 bluejays too!

So my question is -  Can The way the birds are acting tell me whats coming?  Snow or no snow?

Just an interesting question I thought! :)

I dont want snow slappy.

But I think it's gonna turn into a cold end of Jan and a wintery February.

It's cloudy here.
well, i don't know, but my dog is shedding enough to make one think we are in the dead of summer! i HATE dog hair!
Forecast here - rain, rain, and more rain.  Flood warnings for the weekend. Bah!  German shepherd is hiding in the dog house; he knows what's coming!
I just got back home and now there are no birds in sight, the snow trucks have been by and done the roads so there must be something nasty coming.
It's cold, and I don't really see any birds, so I don't really know. ^^;;
Animals notice a shift in atmospheric pressure.  They are noticing a change in the jet stream, which generally means a change in weather.  In this case, it's a warm front coming through followed by a cold front.

Generally, animals will migrate to safer grounds during rain and snow...so you would generally see them locating higher rather than being in the yard.  OR, they may be storing up food for the coming few days. Hard to say. Did you google it?
I smelled a skunk the other day.  Today, I saw a skunk dead on the side of the road.  Skunks are supposed to be hibernating this time of year.  It's a strange Minnesota winter, I tell ya.  I don't think it's a good sign either!
I'm out in California but right now we are having a wicked cold front coming from Alaska so it is below freezing here and my cats still want to go outside- the female wants to go out at 4 AM! Go figure!  This morning I took the two mutts out for a walk along our canal and there wasn't another soul out- usually there are other people out walking but not today! Too cold! Plus- it is windy so I think they said that the wind chill factor was like 20 degrees and being Californians- that is trey too cold for us! But I didn't care- I froze my butt off walking the mutts but it was nice too because I was able to let my very energetic female off lead to run!
I don't know the answer to your question, slappy.  But, I can tell ya, my arthritis is feeling fine today.  We're supposed to have 4-12 inches of snow by Sunday night.

It's been so warm here!  The squirrels have been very busy, still storing food, so they should survive even a really bad cold spell.  I don't like to see buds swelling on flowering trees and shrubs because I know this can't last and we're sure to have at least a few sub zero nights to nip them off.  If that happens, no blossoms in the spring!

I see from the weather map that we have a mass of cold air moving in.  It's raining now and our forecast is that it will be warm enough to stay rain and not snow or ice.

I dread the winter weather, but this is kind of scary.

It will soon be groundhog day, and our resident mascot groundhog, Punxatawney Phil, will tell us if the winter will last another six weeks, or if it will last only a month and a half more.  Did you know that when groundhogs emerge in February they aren't looking for food?  They are looking for sex.
Aren't we all claire! LOL

I was reading a book to Rylee the other night and it said that if you listen to a cricket and count how many times he chirps in 15 seconds and add 40 to that, you will get the temp.

Animals are amazing to me!  We saw a Black squirrel in our yard the other day- it was freaky! I have never seen one before!

I wish we would get some snow and lots of it!  At least we can play in it then!
The cricket thing works every time!  I have had students graph results.  It's a nice linear equation... sorry, I couldn't help the math talk!  LOL  Kelly
I grew up in Nebraska and remember when we visited grandparent's farm we were taught to "watch the cows" They would "huddle" in certain parts of the fields depending on what type of bad weather would be heading our way - like if tornados they would huddle in low lying part same with blizzards but heavy rains they would head for higher ground.

I remember in 1975 a series of tornados flattened 1/3 of Omaha and I remember my dog heading to the basement about 20 minutes before the sirens started blaring and the dog shaking uder a chair in the corner.  She sensed what was about to come.
It has been a warm winter. We're having rain for 4 days and then the cold front is suppost to hit Monday night,  talking about some snow and in the teens at night.  High in the 30's next week, thats the way it goes in the Midsouth. I miss the snow in PA. The kind we had when I was a kid. Well anyways maybe no school on Tues.  My Father- in l-aw counts cricket for the temp. He's an old farmer.  Also we see how many cows are laying down and divide by the total of cows and thats the percentage chance of rain. If they are all laying down just get your umbrella:) If we don't get some cold temps the bugs are going to be terrible this summer.
Interesting with the cows... there are some that live on the corner of two roads that I pass daily- I'll have to try that.... as for crickets...wish I could hear some during the winter....
