Wheat Germ
I have a granola bar recipe I really want to try that calls for this stuff, but I pretty much have no idea where to find it. I've looked in the bulk area, the cereal aisle, the baking aisle, nothing. I don't even really know what it looks like though. Is there somewhere else in a supermarket it may be located?
And since I have all the ingredients for the granola bars, except the wheat germ, what could I replace it with?
I've seen it in a jar, down the cereal aisle, near the kashi and fiber one.
That was in publix.
They hide this stuff in so many different places. I found mine near the oatmeal in the cereal isle, i've also seen it near the pancake mix (??). Ask your store people and they'll find it for ya.
If your grocery store has a "natural foods" section, you might look there. Bob's Red Mill sells wheat germ, and all of their products are frequently located with the organic macaroni and cheese and Luna Bars, at least in a couple of grocery stores I've been to. I've also found some near the oatmeal.
As for replacing it in recipes - if it's a relatively small amount, you could just leave it out. You could also probably replace it with wheat bran, but I doubt that's any easier to find! BTW, wheat germ looks kind of like grits (really coarse corn meal), but it's an attractive honey color. It's slightly sweet, a source of good fat and nutrients, and very tasty. If you do find it and are wondering what to do with it other than granola, I've had good luck in swapping out a fraction of the flour in quick bread recipes with wheat germ.
