ha just kidding. I have found that being a big man, that portion control  is important to losing weight. I love beef, but since i have changed my lifestyle, i can't remeber the last time i had it. I was just wondering if the might be some sort of healthy alternative?

I love roast beef on a sandwich piled high with veggies. It's all about fitting the calories into your day.
this is so true

what's wrong with beef? just because it's not as lean as other meats doesn't make it bad, infact steak/beef is high in iron and protein.

i eat steak once a week. it's tasty, and if you eat the lean meat only it's only 170 calories for 3 ounces.

unless you're one of those guys who eat 24 ounce steaks, i don't see why you can't have steak once a week or a hamburger - just make sure it's extra lean.

but if you want an alternative - some vegetarians say that mushrooms have the same texture and somewhat the same taste. they have mushroom burgers, if you search it here under recipes, you should find a few good ones.

Buffalo and venison are pretty lean, but more expensive. Beef gets a much worse rap than it deserves. There are some pretty lean cuts of beef and very lean chop meat that like Erica said, is only about 150-180 calories per 3 oz. If you took out a scale, you'd see that 3 oz of steak is pretty filling if eaten with side dishes. And depending on your calorie allowance, you could maybe eat 6 oz of steak.

I am no vegetarian but Morningstar makes Meal Starter crumbles which is like ground beef. Only 80 cals for 2/3 cup and has a pretty good flavor.

I've switched from eating beef burgers to eating ostrich burgers .... ostrich has less than 1/3 the fat of beef, and less than 1/2 the fat of skinless chicken! It's available online from a variety of sources; I buy free range ostrich burger patties at Whole Foods.

Instead of ground beef, we now use ground turkey breast ... it works great in tacos and nachos with regular taco seasoning and some grilled onions and peppers!

When I do eat beef, I try to eat only lean sirloin in portion-controlled amounts.

=^..^= MOLLY

You can buy 96/4% lean ground beef that's only 140 calories per 4oz serving.

Or you can always grab a piece of meat from the case and ask the person at the meat counter to grind it for you, that way you know just what you're getting.
I wasn't saying that beef was bad, I was just saying that trying to stay in a reasonable range of calorie intake. that beef seems like a bad chioce for me. 3 oz of meat for me is a bite, and would not fill me up, which is part of my problem. I have tried ground turkey in chili and spagetti . I thought it was good with less calories. But ground turkey isn't a good burger. I will try the mushroom burger. thanks for the ideas

I agree with other posts - nothing wrong with a bit of lean beef in your diet.  I eat it about once a week, maybe a 4 oz. serving, tops.  I get a lot more chicken breast and some fish than anything - no more than 6 oz. total of any meat in a given day.  The meats I avoid like the plague are the ones full of salt, chemicals and fat - the hot dogs, the bacon, etc.

Portion control is not about denying yourself this or that food - it's about eating it in sensible amounts and proportions.  Unless you are dropping red meats for ethical, philosophical or cholesterol reasons.  That's your prerogative.   You say that 3 oz. of meat is a bite fore you -that means you have a ways to go in training yourself in terms of portion control.  One of my favorite lunches is 3 oz. of sliced  baked chicken breast on 1/4 of a baguette for a sandwich with greens and mustard.  This sandwich only has 400 calories, almost no fat and is a great source of protein and leaves me feeling STUFFED.  I used to be unsatisfied with smaller portions, but after several months of sticking to my regimen, my stomach's capacity has shrunk and I really need much less food.  It's great that you are eating leaner meats, but eating even lean meats in excess is not healthful.  Why not fill up on veggies before you have the meat course, then you might be satisfied with a smaller serving?

Oh brother, I can't believe I wrote so much, I'm boring myself.  Feel free to ignore!  LOL.

HOLY MOLY: I CANNOT BELIEVE you have not heard about GRASS-FED beef!!!! You can TOTALLY EAT IT on a diet or off a diet!!!!!!!!!!
Eatwild.com has ALL the information you will ever want to know!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously: you will be thanking me!!

portion control is difficult, no doubt about it.  i often choose the bucket of styrofoam over the ounce of flavor+calories.  however, the styrofoam leaves you unhappy and sometimes more vulnerable to the flavor+calorie item.

udokier is right, just eat the sensible portion.  have some veggies w/it, maybe some tea. it takes time.

I should also mention that I am not some little wisp saying this - I'm a man of 6'2" and was at a top weight of 270+ lbs. 2 years ago, so if *I* can be satisfied by 3-4 oz. servings of meat, ANYONE can.  It's just a change in what you're accustomed to.  Being big, I do probably have bigger servings of salad before a meal than most, and it really helps, besides salads are great for digestion.
