Has anyone else had the problem where they eat something that supposedly has a lot of fiber in it, but it doesn't really fill them at all? For instance, I bought a Gnu Bar from Trader Joe's this morning, ate it slowly, and right away I felt nothing. Of course I waited around 15 minutes to see if the fiber would kick in then, but still nothing. I wasn't even that hungry to begin with.

Btw, for those who don't know, gnu bars have around 12 grams of fiber -48% DV- per bar.

I don't find energy bars in general to be filling. I also believe they have time and place, but it's not a replacement for regular meals. Just my .02 cents.

I would NEVER EVER EVER rely on energy bars to do the trick - first of all they are small - second of all they may have fiber but they have a lot of OTHER CRAP in them and third, it is just so much more pleasant to eat an actual MEAL than a stupid bar that you hardly think about before it is gone.

I think tomorrow you should try eating some egg whites, high fiber toast and tomatoes and see how you feel - I bet you will feel a lot fuller!!

Don't worry guys- I picked this up at Trader Joe's because I'd heard good things about it. It was a mid-morning snack because my stomach was grumbling a little earlier today, but it didn't seem to effect me at all. Just wondering if anybody can agree with me on this one.

My normal breakfasts are actually usually greek yogurt with fruit, an egg white omelette with tomatoes, and some oatmeal. I'm big on breakfast!

what about an egg omelette, the white+yolk, its really good for you+has tons of energy boosting vitamins!

I grew up loving eggs, but then around the time I was eleven or twelve, my bloodwork came back after a physical and my doctor said I had really high cholesterol. He wouldn't even let me be in the room, because he wanted to talk to my mom privately.

I'm sure my mom exaggerated (she is total worry-wart) but high cholesterol does run in my family, so I try to be cautious. Any recommendations for how many eggs I could have in a week and be okay?

Yes, I have this problem with oatmeal, which is supposedly high on the satiety scale.  I do not find it satisfying whatsoever and always wish I had eated something else.

Fibre doesn't fill you up all by itself, it's bulk that does that.   If you took a pill that contained 12g fibre you'd not feel full.  If you get 12g fibre from however many apples or carrots it would be a lot more bulk for your stomach to work on and you'd feel more full.

Protein and fibre is the most filling combination.  If you have genetically high cholesterol you should probably ask your doctor to talk to you about it one on one... rather than relaying the facts through someone that might exaggerate.  What you should know is that cholesterol is just one 'risk factor'.  Not everyone who has a heart-attack has high cholesterol and not everyone who has high cholesterol goes on to have a heart-attack.  The other risk factors are smoking, being overweight, eating a lot of meat and full-fat dairy products, being inactive.....   So if you're not overweight, if you don't eat meat every day, if you choose low-fat dairy products and if you take regular exercise you can mitigate your genetically high cholesterol.

Regarding eggs, therefore.... for the general population there is now no limit on what is a 'safe' number of whole eggs to eat.  For advice specific to you, ask your doctor next time you see them.  Best of luck.

whenever i eat something like that I drink a tall glass of water with it. That seems to make me feel very full. I think we all know it isn't to replace a meal but sometimes we are in a pinch. If you are eating that much fiber at one sitting drink plenty of water with it. If you don't feel full after that, then at least you have tried and can plan better next time. Its all a learning experience anyway, right?

when fiber is in a compact form such as a bar then you need to have something to drink with it so it can expand and fill you up. Energy bars alone don't do much but a bar + lots of water would be just fine. Fruit and such is already filled with water.
