Whey Protein?

Quote  |  Reply
Can anyone give any insight on whey protein? Why is it better than regular protein shakes? Is any kind of whey protein good, what do you recommend?

I'm brainstorming on ways to get more protein in my diet, and wanted to know what the hype was about in 'whey'..

Here are a few facts:

Whey protein is a pure, natural, high quality protein from cow's milk. It is a rich source of the essential amino acids needed on a daily basis by the body. In its purest form, as whey protein isolate, it contains little to no fat, lactose or cholesterol.

  • Whey protein contains bioactive components that help stimulate the release of two appetite-suppressing hormones: cholecystokinin (CCK) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). In support of this, a new study found that whey protein had a greater impact on satiety than casein, the other protein in milk. Adding whey protein to a mid-day snack or beverage provides healthy energy and may help control food intake at the next meal.
  • Whey protein is a soluble, easy to digest protein and is efficiently absorbed into the body. It is often referred to as a "fast" protein for its ability to quickly provide nourishment to muscles.

Thanks, jawild! Do you recommend using this over other protein shakes?
I prefer it to soy.  I found I tend to retain my weight more when im on too much soy products due to estrogen levels in soy products.

it also absorbs a lot faster, which is perfect for me b/c I need fast absorbstion for my muscles to rebuild after I weight train.

if you are doing strength training, which i beleive you are, I would reccomend whey.
oops I meant to say, estrogen-like chemical levels in the soy.

there is a chemical is soy that mimics estrogen.
Cool! I'm going to pick some up tonight!
    awesome!

look to see if you can find one that has natural sweetners.   read the labels carefully.

I get mine from costco, its an all natural one. no arftificial sweetners, 90 cals per scoop and like 20 g of protein.

stay away from ones that have nasty chemical additives.

chocolate is yummy, i use vanilla b/c it tastes super good with milk, and if i want to mix it with fruit and such.

My favorie whey protein is made by Designer Whey.  Not only do they have the powders (which are available in handy to-go packs), but they make fruit juice bottles, as well, if you're looking for something lighter and refreshing to sip on.  They're running a promotion now, too.  http://www.designerwhey.com/samples.htm

Okay, I'm a Lacto-Ovo vegetarian. basically, I don't eat any meat form the animal itself. Not fat, broth or even gelatin. Anyways, the smoothie shop where i work offers both soy and whey protein and i always get soy because of the description of whey.

It reads something along the lines of made from dairy and animal products. That makes me think that it has actual animal in it. And, though i would like to try it I'm not sure I'm willing to risk it. Is all whey just dairy based or do some have the actual animal in it?
