Should I get whey protein?

Quote  |  Reply

I have about 60-70 lbs to lose and I don't think that I get enough protein even though I eat about 8 ounces of chicken and half a can of tuna every day.  A friend of mine suggested that I get some whey protein and mix a scoop before and after exercise.  Is whey safe and is it recommended during weight loss?

Whey is safe, however remember to count the calories posted on the side of the bin.  One 35g scoop of the whey which I have in my cupboard has 130cal.  That's about 1/15th of your daily caloric intake added to something that you're already eating.  If you keep that in mind, it's one of the easiest ways to add protein to a smoothie.  Whey smoothies will taste a little funny and only some of them work well.  As a start try vanilla whey with a banana with some water or skim milk and add splenda to taste.  It's simple but gives you an idea of what to expect.

Thanks!

Unless you're a professional body builder, its highly unlikely that you need more protein.  You only need 50-70 grams per day, and the chicken alone is giving you about 60 grams.  People also forget that tons of other foods have protein in them-- nuts, bread, milk, cheese, eggs, all have a significant amount of protein.  Dont stress, and use the calories you'd spend on whey protein to add some more produce into your diet!

Whey is a derivative of dairy... so if you cannot handle dairy, don't buy whey... I wouldn't necessarily recommend protein supplements of any kind... except for egg protein... but even that is typically mixed with artificial flavors, sugars, and weird ingredients not meant for the body. You should really just up your protein through food... There are other sources of protein out there OTHER than boring chicken & tuna! ha ha! How about some salmon, mackerel, sardines, chilean sea bass, eel, hamachi, escolar, scallops, shrimp, grass-fed red meats, ostrich, whole eggs, etc?! You need to go explore your local food store at all these awesome protein foods - because they are all incredibly healthy & definitely recommended for weight loss!

Unless your involved in competitve sport, bodybuilding or train with high intensity I wouldn't bother waisting your money on a whey protein supplement.

You'll be able to get enough protein from natural foods.

Personally I use supplements to support the intensity of my training.  There's nothing magical about the supplements, I just can't afford to buy enough fresh chicken and tuna to get the required protein.

My advice to you is to not worry about whey protein.

My advice is to get whey protein, because it's an easy and relatively cheap way to eat protein, depending on the brand you buy it can taste great and it's also filling. Also, if you choose chocolate or vanilla whey, it lets you eat something sweet and good for you. I recommend Optimum Nutrition whey protein, it tastes great and makes thick shakes.

some stores, like whole foods, sell individual servings of the protein powders, so you can try different kinds and find one you like before spending 15-20 bucks on a canister of it. i found this a helpful thing. they sales guy told me that whey is much easier for many people to metabolize than soy.

i find i don't need to supplement my protein very often, but every once in a while, it is helpful.
