I have always heard of guys drinking whey protein to build muscle (I might be wrong as I am not too informed on this). I would like to learn more about it cause I have been thinking about starting to use it. I am a 15 yr. old girl, I weigh 130 pounds (down from 250) and my height is 5'6''. After loosing 120 pounds I feel comfortable with my current weight but I would really like to focus on building muscle, after loosing all that weight I really need to get more toned. So I guess my question is would it be ok for me to drink whey protein?
All advices and opinion are greatly appreciated!
I have used whey protein in the past. The problem I had with it was that to use it you need to make milkshakes or something of that sort in order to make it taste decent. My issue was that the shakes added at least 200 calories and the protein powder was around 50-100 calories, so you ultimately end up with a 300 calories snack. Unfortunately, the men that bulk up with whey protein consume probably at least 3 or 4 of those a day. Those calories really add up!
Basically, I tried it, but couldn't commit to more than one shake a day because I wasn't looking to gain weight. It didn't work for me, but it might work for you. You can always give it a try and see how it works for you. Just be sure to continue to eat well balanced meals (don't go on a whey protein shake diet
).
I drink a whey protein drink (just a powder shaked with either milk or water) after days where I weight train. I have also made some shakes during the day on off days too if I find I need the extra protein for the day.
I've only done this for two weeks now, but so far things seem to be going good.
Like bodyscience says, do it mainly immediately after a weight workout, and make sure you're being aggressive about the weight you are using. This Book also encourages consumption of high gylcemic carbs immediately after a workout as well. It's important to get a 3:1 carb:protein fueling within 45 minutes of a workout.
Also, for me, I didn't start getting results until I started lifting very regularly---every other day, not just once or twice a week sometimes.
Congratulations on the weight loss. That's really amazing.
Thankyou all for your responses! I think I will give it a try!
One thing that most people overlook is eating before you go train w/ weights. It is a good idea to give your body some fuel for the workout.
Check out this site, I have used it on more than once occasion to buy supplements and the sort.
First off, congratulations on losing that much weight!!! You must be estatic. You're so young too, you did such a great thing!!
Whey protein is awesome and your body needs it if you want to tone. How many grams of protein do you eat in a day? That's where you should start. Like I am told I should have 100 grams of protein. It is very hard for me to hit that (I do on some days) but I take EAS Whey Protein shakes and they're awesome.
EAS is a reputable company (affiliated with body for life) and they do extensive research. They made a product called AdvantEdge whey protein that I found in the grocery store and that had low chloresterol, but apparently they discontinued it. I buy it online now, or at Costco (Costco has it cheap, like 6 lbs for $30) and mix it with nonfat milk. I personally love the taste.
Good luck and congrats again.
Very very proud, you have inspired me.
