Whey protien

Quote  |  Reply

I was wondering if anyone knows if protien powder with whey in it, but not 100% whey powder is alright. That's what I've been using just because it's cheaper and I can get it at Costco but I'm trying to figure out if it really matters or not. Any ideas?

i use optimum. when you say not 100% whey what else does it have? dextrose is some times used as it supposedly helps with delivering the nutrients into your tissues (or something) faster.

It is about 1/3 whey protien, 1/3 soy protien and 1/3 contein? I don't know what that is but I don't think it has any dextrose in it. Do you know anything about that? I think soy protien is alright though. I'm not sure.

what the heck is contein?? there's a whole debate over soy. everything in moderation is what i believe tho. as for whey, its supposed to be the best for fast absorption compared to other sources. just try it out for awhile & see if it helps. you might have to experiment with multiple protein drinks to be able to tell which ones really work for you.

Could it be casein instead of contein?

I just posted about this in the thread about the group in the fitness forum, but it bears repeating.  trueprotein.com allows you to custom mix protein and they have a lot of pre-mix formulas.  Any questions you have, the guys over there can answer.  They have a huge variety of different types of proteins including whey, casein, milk protein isolate, as well as differently filtered versions and whatnot.  It's easy to find an affordable version of what you want.  like i said, the guys over there are extremely knowledgeable and can give you several options for finding what you're looking for.  They gave me a 5% discount code that you ladies can use, KYN741, if you want to try it out.  Not trying to advertise, but the knowledge and support of their staff and their products should do the advertising for them!

Yeah...Sealed You're right. That's what I meant...it's casein. You know what that is? So katiemac, how do you know exactly what you want? That's what I'm trying to figure out. Maybe I need to just do more research on it but I just figure protien in general is what helps with the muscle building. Does trueprotien.com have a store or do you just talk on line with them?

Casein's the other kind of protein you get from milk.

You talk to them online, and they have a forum where the have reviews of products and people ask general questions. Everyone is really helpful.  But basically I had no idea there were so many different types of protein and other supplements until I stumbled across their site.  Basically what I have is something called BCAA Boost, a custom mix, a during the day protein, and a before bed.  Most people just need a pre-workout and a post-workout and if you're less serious about exact needs at exact times you can probably do with just one to serve both of those purposes.  The BCAA Boost is BCAAs (branched chain amino acids if you don't know...they're essential proteins which means your body can't make them but they are necessary), caffeine, and green tea extract.  It's supposed to help with fat loss without sacrificing lean mass.  My custom mix I use post workout and it is comprised of 10% PeptoPro, a protein that's small enough to be broken down in the intestines and that is hydrolyzed to be water soluble.  Along with this I have 75% amylocel (waxy maize starch), a carbohydrate that can bypass the stomach (bringing the PeptroPro with it) and replenish the body's glycogen stores faster than other carbs without the bloating some other carbs can cause. It also has 5%BCAAs and 10% Leucine, the most important BCAA in rebuilding muscle.  Since this has such a low ratio of protein (carbs are needed after your workout to replenish your energy stores), I use a pre-mix formula of whey and casein about a half hour later to get some protein in and get my body out of a catabolic (breakdown) state.  The whey is fast digesting to get some immediate protein, and the casein is slow digesting so it supplies muscles with proteins for about 4 hours.  Then before bed I use a milk protein isolate which digests over a period of about 6 hours, which is almost ling enough to keep the body in an anabolic state while sleeping.

Like I said, all of this probably isn't necessary for most people, I just wanted to give it a shot and it's offered at fair prices.  BCAAs are bitter and they are difficult to dissolve, and it's tough to cover up the taste with flavor, so they aren't for the faint of heart.  They have a ton of pre-mixed formulas and whey proteins that can be used if you're just looking for a post-workout, and even some that can be used as both a pre and a post.  They have a lineup of amazing flavors and if you contact them they are extremely helpful.  I got an email response within 24 hours to a question, then did a little research on their forums for opinions on products before I came up with that order!

Sorry for the long post but I'm really impressed with this company.  They aren't a big company, their owners post on the boards and they really care about offering their customers quality products.

Also, feel free to message me if you have specific questions or post here.  I'm pretty active on the boards over there and can probably find you an answer!

Wow! That's amazing how much you know about that! I didn't know any of that so thanks so much for the info! I am trying to figure all this out and I had no idea how hard it was to stay on top of ratios of all this different stuff in your foods, and protien drinks and all that stuff. I'm still trying to figure out what works for me in this program 'cause all I seem to be doing is gaining weight and that's not exactly what I'm going for! I think I'll use up the protien that I have and then I'll probably come to you for some more info or with questions! Thanks so much!

No problem, I really love learning about this stuff. Once you get me going you can't shut me up!

Should women use Whey Protein vs Soy Protein? Is there a difference?

Can I use the same protein powder as my hubby?

I use the same as my husband. I buy the big bag at costco. It's like 5lbs or something like that. I think it's fine to use the same kind. I don't know that much about it though so, not sure what my opinion is worth. Laughing
