whey or soy protein powder?

Quote  |  Reply
I have been using soy protein powder every since I read Barry Sears The Zone back in 2001 (when I still ate meat!)

I use it in my oatmeal and smoothies.

So my questions, which is better and why?

Any thoughts??  Thank you!!! :)

I use mostly soy protein in other forms because the powders make my stomach hurt and my digestion gets really off. If I have to add protein to anything, I add hempseed protein. I think most stores carry it near the soy protein. Sorry I wasn't much of a help, I'd do research on the internet. I've heard that soy protein can hold a lot of water and make you more bloated than whey protein. I'm not completely sure on that though.
like veganlove, i prefer hempseed powder but it costs a bit more than soy protein powder.  i am biased to the soy protein powder because i'm trying to reduce and eventually eliminate dairy from my diet.

if you have a Trader Joe's [all-natural grocery store with some organic options] near you, i recently picked up a tub of pure soy protein powder.  no sweeteners, thickeners, nothing else added.  it was cheap, too, i think maybe $3.
Thanks for the replies.  I am from SF and always bought the TJ's vanilla soy protein powder, and my parents even send it to me here!  But I'm almost out and I will run out before my next care package!

I found some hempseed powder online, I might try it.  Thanks for the suggestion! :)
i prefer whey protien, it mimics milk alot better than soy, you can mix it in any recipe that calls for milk, such as smooties, and not really notice it.,

not to mention soy protien gives me indigestion.
I found hemp seed powder online here!  I'm gonna buy it and give it a go.  Been doing lots of reading from other vegans/vegetarians who think its much better for our bodies than soy or whey.

Thanks again!!
If you look for brown rice and pea powder, those two sources actually form a complete protein, and depending on your view of soy being overprocessed, might be a more sound choice.

i agree with using hempseed powder.  nutiva has a good one.  i would try and avoid soy if i were you.  its hard esp if you want to cook meat alternatives...but if you can try and avoid it when you can

My fitness trainer (a registered nurse)  explained that whey protein has more usable protein and also has all of the amino acids.  I use the Life Extension product.
I have a hypothyroid condition and only eat non-processed soy.  I tried the hemp protein but found I didn't use it because I really disliked the taste.  I've been successful with a whey protein called Whey Good.  Tasty, mixes well and I stomach it well.  It states that it has prebiotics also which I like because I follow it up with probiotics.
