If I have a couple whiskey sodas(water) why does my nutrition grade go so much lower?  They don't add many calories.

well idunno wat a whiskey soda is.. but they drop any grade real low if it has any alchohol in it.. regardless of calorie amount.

do you know why? isn't a calorie a calorie?

ridiculously low, in my opinion.

Adding 2 tsp of vanilla extract to a baked goods recipe lowers the grade a whole letter point, regardless of the fact that the alcohol evaporates during the baking process.

sorry, pet peeve with this site.

ever read animal farm?

all calories are equal.  but some calories are more equal than others.

The rating system is flawed to the point  I usually ignore it.  Pretty much everyone agrees that peanut butter is a wonder food, but it (usually) only gets a C-.  Your daily grade is an average of all the grades of the foods you've eaten that day, regardless of how well-balanced (carbs/fat/protein/alcohol wise) it was, or how close you were to your calorie target.

It's the alcohol content.   To rebalance your rating you'd have to add more  things like fruit and vegetables.   If your whole day is well-balanced you can include a couple of units of alcohol and still get an A grade.  If your day is imbalanced then the alcohol will ratchet it down further.

Edited to add.... I just added 2 x 1oz units of scotch to my food log for yesterday.... the grade didn't budge.  When I added a third ounce it dropped it from A to A-

Interestingly, however, if I keep all other food entries constant but have a beer (153 calories, grade C-) my grade always goes to a B or B-, but if I have a glass of red wine (88 calories, grade C, but approximate the same amount of alcohol), my overall daily grade stays an A. I agree that the grade system in this website is pretty much worthless. Even within categories of very similar foods (e.g. different brands of canned vegetables) the grades can vary quite a bit. I generally ignore them.
