white flour and sugar addiction?

Quote  |  Reply
Hi, I am beginning to think I really may have a problem with these foods.  They seem to set off a binge reaction in me.  I've looked on the web but there's almost too much information -- does anyone have a recommendation for a good book or web site where I can start educating myself?

Thanks in advance.

You can get more advice here than anywhere - some not so helpful - but for the majority - lots of information and good advice.  I don't think it is those foods setting off that reaction, I think it is what so many people do, and I have myself.  You are doing so good on your diet, then you eat something you shouldn't - - - and give up.  Forget about it and go on to the next day as nothing has happened and stick with it - I know you can!
I don't know about for the white sugar, but for me if i eat wheat then i start to crave it, but if i don't eat it then i don't miss it. (i shouldn't eat it, and don't normally because it makes me feel quite ill)

Is it all foods that you want to eat once you have eaten wheat/sugar, or just foods containing these substances? Also do you have any other symptoms? If it is all types of food that you want to eat once you have had them, then it may be as cperrywebrat suggests a more psychological effect. BUt if it is only for more foods containing these products, then maybe there is a more direct relationship.

Perhaps if you cut them out for a while, and then try some controlled reintroductions of each of them seperatly and see what happens.   Also i do believe that in general we know pretty much which foods we should and shouldn't eat, and we should listen to our bodies if they seem to be telling us not to eat something.
My reasoning for my answer is this:

Previously I have failed - 3 times to be exact.  I enjoyed eating all the time - cared about the weight - but not so much that I wanted to give up my way of eating - whatever and whenever I wanted.

When I dieted, and first started to change the way I was eating - eating those things such as sugar and white flower brought me back to the days when I enjoyed eating those foods so much - and made me want to forget my diet and continue with the tasty stuff.

Continued persistence has paid off and forced me to recognize my feelings and why this was happening - and I know now to resist those things.  Something just kicks inside of you when you have achieved success in knowing you will win this most difficult challenge in your life.

I hope that made sense :)
Thanks!!
Actually, my former neighbor went to over eaters annoymous and I remember her telling me that they banned her from eating white sugar and white flour, because they are triggers.

I too struggle with them.  I'm okay with my morning coffee, but if I eat more during the day, I want more, more, more!  So I try to stay away from them as much as I can.
I find alcohol is a terrible trigger as well.
I was the same way, and just found out I am insulin resistant, or "pre-diabetic."  Do you crave but never seem to get enough of them and find that when you're hungry, you automatically think of sweet or starchy foods?  If so, you may want to have your blood sugar levels tested.  It isn't an allergy, but if one is pre-diabetic or insulin resistant, they are sensitive to sugars, flour, potatoes, etc.
