It's more likely to be dried wax.  Apples and other fruits are routinely washed in a wax solution so that they stay fresh in storage.  Where it collects at the hollow near the stem, and dries it can appear white and dusty.  Wash the apple and it should come off.

I just went apple picking and there's powder all over my apples.  I doubt it's anything major, just rinse it.

When you pick apples and other fruit there is sometimes a white powder that is called the "bloom".  I think it's harmless yeasts from the air.  It's what makes grapes turn into wine and cider turn hard.  It washes right off.

Okay, thanks for the replies!  Because I have been eating those apples for weeks already and I was worried that I was mistakenly ingesting a lot of pesticide! (although I probably am anyway, considering they are apples)  But the fact that they were visible made me concerned. =]

If you're really worried about the stuff on fruit and vegetables, you can always get a Fruit & Vegetable Wash.

You can also get a white sort of film on fruit and some veggies aswell. This is typically sucrose.
