How many whole eggs should I eat in a day?
Asked by anonymous on Oct 14, 2009 in Nutrition

I'm a 27 year-old male.  I workout regularly (weight lifting) and am trying to gain weight (my body type is ectomorph).  How many eggs should I eat a day without being worried about my cholesterol levels and health problems?

Answer

The new saying is "an egg a day is okay".  The American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines no longer include a recommendation to limit eggs.  Egg whites were never limited because cholesterol is only in the yolk. The AHA new guidelines focus on selecting "healthy" foods and limiting all foods high in saturated fat and cholesterol without naming specifics. The literature no longer supports the idea that egg consumption is a risk factor for heart disease.  Epidemiological data shows that three of the highest egg-consuming countries in the world - Japan, Spain and France - have the lowest rates of cardiovascular mortality.
