Whole wheat bagels... good or bad?

Quote  |  Reply

I keep hearing that bagels are bad for you, but is it just one of those myths? I have fell inlove with ww bagels and have atleast one a day for breakfast. I bought them for the fibre which was 8 grams per bagel. Buuuut what is all this don't eat bagels about?

Bagels got bad rep during the "low carb diet" phase when all bread was EVIL. There's nothing really wrong with them. In reality, whole wheat or whole grain bagels are fine and a good source of fiber... just be careful of the size. Some bagels tend to be HUGE and can have 400+ cals without any toppings. If you're eating normal sized, whole grain bagels as part of a balanced diet, it's not a problem.

the carbs are pretty bad BUT chosing whole wheat or multi grain bagels are the best. Whole wheat are great for breakfast. I like thomas's mini bagels whole wheat cause they have like 100 cals in only 1. Top it off w. natrual pb and maybe a banana or apple and thats a delic breakfast and its sure to fill you up.

What I have learned on CC:

There are no good or bad foods - only good and bad quantities. If you like a particular food, eat it in a sensible quantity....

Remember that bagels are six servings of bread. That is all of your grain servings for the day according to a 2000 calorie per day food pyramid. It won't hurt to have one once a week, but every day is pushing it. Hope that helps!

Crikey hollywoodhunny - that would be one huge bagel!

I had a cinnamon and raisin bagel this morning for breakfast that weighed 100g  - 218 kcals  perfectly acceptable with a banana for a decent breakfast.... ~I woudn't be eating 6 of them, but one is fine for breakfast as part of a healthy balanced food intake

One bagel has the same amount of bread as if you squished six slices of bread into it. According to my health teacher and that one movie "Super Size Me."

Actually my 1/2 multigrain bagel I had this morning weighed 57 grams.  My usual multi-grain slice of bread weighs 32 grams.  So that would be just over 1.5 slices of bread weighing the same as the bagel or if I go with a full bagel 3 slices of bread.  Now the calories/sodium etc - that's a different story.

If you want to eat a bagel for breakfast eat a one. its your choice. If you can work it into your cal intake daily then do it. Just keep it light on the carbs for the rest of the day if your worried about too many carbs.

Bagels are fine for you. If you are that concerned about the carb intake maybe eat half a bagel for breakfast with some eggs. That would definitely also stretch out your bagels...12 breakfasts instead of just 6. I dont see anything wrong with eating bagels. Its all about what works for you. If you can eat them and still lose weight, then eat away

Thomas or Sara Lee brand "everything bagels" are 260-270 calories.  I consider them huge.  Try making french toast the same way you do with bread, but put it in a waffle iron to cook.  Sounds odd, but a real treat.  That is especially wonderful with whole wheat or bagels with blueberries.

A piece of bread isn't worth 200-300 calories to me, but there's no reason not to eat bagels if you like them. They're no worse than any other kind of bread.

You made me want a bagel. I found these small 100 calorie bagels. :) YUM.

Alternative bagels "Perfect 10 Bagel", tastes so good, has tons of fiber and protein.

i think bagels have gotten a bad rep just like potatoes b/c of the low carb diet craze thing.... i think as long as you have one there is no harm, the WW bagels are especially good b/c they have all that fiber!
