whole wheat or not??

Quote  |  Reply

I've just be diagnosed with IBS (both C & D)- and have low vitamin D.  I have an appointment with the doctor and nutritionist to discuss a possible diet in a week.  So, I've been looking at diets for IBS on the web and some say to eat whole wheat and others say to stay away from it -- only eat sourdough bread.  So what do you do??

Did you ever find out the answer to your question? I'm dealing with IBS, which I was given that diagnosis 10 years ago and initially put on medicine but within 6 months I was better so discontinued meds.  10 years later I'm at the worst I have ever been - waiting to see doc - but your question is one of many I have. Just curious and hope you are doing better now Smile

well, not really.  I went to the dr and she decided that my issues with ibs are stress related, so we are addressing my stress first to see if everything gets better.  I've been taking Cymbalta for a week now and feeling much better.  I'm trying to not let the little things stress me out.  I haven't had any tummy pain for at least three days and I don't have any side effects to the meds, yet-- so that's good.

I guess, from what I've been reading, that you just have to try to figure out what your trigger foods are.  I do know that fried food and too much dairy tend to give me D -- so I try to limit those things or know what the consequences will be.  I'd be interested to know what your dr tells you, too.

Hope you get feeling better soon!

Good for you, it's a start!  I have heard good things about Cymbalta.  When I was first diagnosed my doc told me it was more then likely stress related.  And 10 years later I'm remarried and we have four teenagers in the house, I'm in the broadcasting business which is nothing but stress and for whatever crazy reason I thrive on being under pressure, crazy I know.  I have a huntch mine is related to stress as well but as I mentioned this time it's worse then ever - I got crazy and purchased a colon cleansing kit last night.  In addition I started Wellbutrin a few weeks back because of the seasonal depression I have been blessed with.  Wellbutrin helps me dramatically and I feel great mentally but not the ol' stomach.  Time will tell - I have doubled my water intake the last few days too.  Generally I drink 64 ozs but I feel the need to drowned out anything that may be lodged down there.

P.S. Have you ever tried Yoga?  I'm proof that it helps to relieve stress - besides power walking it is the only thing that truly relaxes me, just never seem to have time to do it as much as I would like.

I hope you continue on the positive side & Happy Thanksgiving

My first gastro. dr told me to eat a high fiber diet.  Whole wheat = more fiber than sourdough (plus I don't like sourdough much...) so I eat a lot of whole wheat stuff.
