Why's everyone so obsessed with subway?

Quote  |  Reply

Everyone on this forum seems to act like it's so delicous and special....I don't know about you but I can (and do) make a better turkey sub at home. People seem to really crave and enjoy it - but why? Is it just the idea of fast convenience food? I just can't figure out why everyone is so into subway.

Probably because if you're on a diet, a subway sub with no mayo and maybe no cheese is about your best option if you MUST eat out.  Salads get old, and tbh, i don't like most fast food salads, they're too small and it's difficult to find vegetarian salads.

I'm glad I have a subway nearby to run to, if I forget to pack a lunch and my only other options are greasy chinese, delicious but fattening arbys or generic McD's.  Plus, I can buy a five dollar footlong, eat half (2.50 lunch) and the other half for dinner (2.50 dinner).

Dammit.. now I want subway.

I've never understood the obsession either. I think they must put addictive chemicals in their food or something. The smell alone makes me gag. But I really don't care for any fast food.

I love their salads....I eat one 4 or 5 times a week for lunch.  I go to the same subway by the office so they know me....they have it started before I get to the front of the line.  They always pile up the veggies so the container barely closes!  Yum!

I know, right? Who wants iceberg lettuce and ridiculously thinly sliced veggies and sodium packed deli meats? The only draw would be freshly baked bread and the convenience but since I plan my meals ahead, I don't need to resort to Subway.

I hate Subway. I think their sandwiches stink. Never enough protein, just veggies on bread. If I wanted all veggies, I'd eat a salad. I'd call Subway a carb bomb with veggie sandwich.

You can count both my parents as addicted though. They eat there all the time. I just do not get it.

I think it is just the idea that you can still eat out with friends and family and get a sub for under 300 calories if you are careful. Subway is not that healthy. The whole wheat bun is not "whole grain" the meat is processed and loaded with sodium and nitrates. Even some of the condiments, jalapeño peppers, banana peppers, olives are processed and also loaded with sodium. It is healthier than say a big mac with cheese and dressing but not clean.

You can make a healthy sub at home that tastes so much better. Fresh turkey, whole grain bun, fresh veggies and so on. It is convenient though when you are in a hurry and a better fast food choice than most other places.

Different people have different opinions on what is healthy. Some are not educated in nutrition. I know people who think lean cuisine, weight watchers dinners and diet coke are healthy foods.

I think it's just that I've never considered subway "eating out". When I go out to eat I go to real restaurants - ones that generally don't list their calorie count online and they make everything fresh. I never considered a deli sandwich healthy and I still don't. I eat deli sliced turkey at home but when I make a sandwich I use really healthy bread, a small amount of turkey, avocado, and fresh veggies. And I only pack that for lunch when I'm out of healthier food or I really have to eat something on the go - it just seems silly to me that people get so excited over subway!

I don't understand all the subway bashing, actually. All this complaining about sodium. Well yes, that's what happens when you pickle things.. like the peppers and pickles!

Footlong turkey, no cheese, lettuce, tomato, cucumbers (extra), jalapenos, banana peppers, pickles (screw sodium, my blood pressure is fine), lots of red wine vinegar all for 5 bucks when I'm on the run from school to work. 6" Then, 6" at 8:30 before I start my closing duties.

Most of the sub places around here ONLY have white rolls to make sandwiches on. That's why Subway and Blimpie are awesome, Blimpie just doesn't have as many veggie choices (the ones we have here anyway).

I'd love to make a great sandwich at home if I could afford to let all the bread and turkey I bought go to waste because I'm the only one eating it :\ I buy veggies and they seem to go bad before I can use them! :(

I've only eaten at Subway maybe 8 times my entire life and I'm 37.  I don't care for deli sandwiches in general, but if you must have one and you're watching your weight, I guess it's a good option.  Any time I've gone there, I've gotten the roast beef with all veggies and a splash of vinegar and mustard.  Those are actually pretty tasty.  If I'm doing fast food while counting calories though, I prefer a Chick Fi La chargrill sandwich with a fruit cup.  Different strokes...

I like Subway but I prefer Thundercloud Subs!  The have the best bread!

Jennifer, yes!!! MMM Thundercloud is awesome! They don't have it in Dallas, but my bro got me hooked on going whenever I am in Austin. YUMMY!

Yeah Subway is pretty much the healthiest choice for me if I don't bring my lunch to work. If there is a group of us going to eat from work, we can go there and everyone can be happy with the various choices. No it's not "health food" but it's a lot better than fast food or Tex Mex or something like that. And it's kind of cheap now that they've reduced prices on some of the subs. Ideal? No. Okay? Yes.

Whats there to figure out?

You don't like it....others do. Get over it. Just because it may be a popular thing and you dont like it doesnt mean that there is a problem.

Personally I love subway. Its convenient and the healthiest "fast food" I can think to get without feeling guilty.

AndI agree with a previous poster...screw sodium (my bloodpressure is fine as well). Other than that...subway is Goooooood. Yum

Can I make better food at home? Absolutely. I probably eat Subway less than 10 times/year. That being said, I love knowing that Subway is an option. They are cheap and offer a whole wheat roll and plenty of reasonably fresh vegetables you can add to your sub. I am not kidding myself that it is especially "healthy," but I don't eat red meat or poultry, and Subway is probably the fast food chain with the tastiest veggie option (the veggie max). If I get it, I ask for the baby spinach instead of iceberg lettuce, which makes it much more awesome.

It's a life saver when you're on a road trip.  Subway may not be healthy compared to food you can make at home, but it's a heck of a lot healthier than the alternatives at the truck stop (though Tim Horton's isn't bad either if you ignore the pastries).

Not everyone can easily make the same thing at home.

I live in a dorm room, am on a meal plan, and I have about $20 to spend per week. I don't really have the option to slice up the veggies like they do at subway, and I don't eat enough to really even make it worth buying them. On the weekends, the only things available in the caf are hamburger and fries, pizza and the scary sketchy salad bar. So I get a footlong turkey every Saturday and eat half for lunch then and half on Sunday.

More importantly, I just like Subway. You don't. What's the issue?

Pezzle and Santana stole the words right out of my mouth! Subway is awesome!

You may not like it, but its not silly that others do.  :)

I dont like subway because their subs are super cheap w. the meat. Even if I just wanted a grilled chicken and provolone on the parmasean bread its usually very blah. Im a Quiznos' kinda girl. I dont eat it that much cause I only like thier Baja chicken sub which is super good but only on a cheat day or if im really craving quiznos. I like that I can get it on a whole wheat sub roll too if  I wanted.

I also go to quick check for my subs which surprisingly their really good. Some days I get just a deli sliced turkey, w. provolone (or fresh mozzarella)  little olive oil and some italian seasoning on their whole wheat or if im being bad italian parm. crusted bread. and its supper good. but its not cheaply made.

Delicious and special? Ugh, no. But it is convenient on those occasions when things go pear-shaped and my choices are eating at Subway, eating something well outside my calorie allowance, or not eating.

I'd rather fix something myself, given my druthers, but I don't always get my druthers.

I also like to get Shortis from WaWa, if anyone else is up north you'll know what I mean :)
