wife with neck injury......

Quote  |  Reply

My wife was in a car accident and has 2 disks in her neck that need to be removed.  She wants to know what she can (besides walking) to help with the weight loss before they are removed, and after.

Does anyone have exercises she can do?

thanks

Dave

We can't know all the complications

She should really ask her docs this question

Her doctor does

I would think she could anything that doesn't cause her pain for now.  If she has surgery, I would think she would have physical therapy and they would be able to tell her what she can do as she heals.

I am not a doctor, but I also have bad disks in my neck.  I have had MRI's and I know that I have 2 bulging disks in my neck (cervical) and at least 2 bulging disks in my lower back (lumbar).

I had cortisone injections in the cervical area that they told me would only last 2-3 years, but it has been over 5 years since I had them, and I have not had a recurrence of my old problems; pain, numbness in hands, loss of strength, etc.

I have been weight lifting, jogging (intervals -- working my way up to HIIT type), and I bowl several times a week.  When I first talked to my doctor I asked him what I could do, and he said I could do whatever I want that doesn't make it hurt.  He did indicate I should stay away from anything like martial arts, roller-coasters, and rear-impact car accidents, lol.  Anything that might give me whip-lash or jar my neck.

I took my time when I started lifting weights, and I haven't had any problems.

I have a couple of herniated discs in the cervical area and physical therapy really helped.. At the time I was diagnosed, about 7 years ago, my doctor would not let me exercise at all. It was quite painful to walk so I was not about to try anything out...

Once the physical therapy had taken effect, I started swimming, walking, biking and lifting weights.. I found that running hurts my back so I tend to stay away but I am otherwise very adventurous when it comes to outdoor activities as ong as they are not super high impact... I also know that losing weight helps me incredibly! I have lost about 30 lbs this year and noticed a huge difference over the last few months..

I would strongly suggest that your wife consult with her doctor before trying any exercise.
