Quote  |  Reply

hello everyone i am a student in drafting and design and my final project before i graduate was design an item. well because most of my day is spent on my well being i figure i would design something i would love to have which is a bycicle that was hooked up to the Wii system i know there is going to the Wii fit but i theres no cardio which i need. So i am doing a survey to see who would like to have one of these also? thanks in advance.

that would be cool

it could absolutely be cool...i clicked on the post because i thought maybe there was one coming out and i was all excited!

a wii bike would be awesome.. if i had a wii

If you want cardio, try DDR

How times have changed! I designed an instant coffee dispenser in my sophomore year.

There is at least one system that hooks a trainer up to a computer, which could be a Wii.  To use the system you have to set your bike up on the trainer and put in a DVD.  I am not sure of the details because I haven't been able to convince myself that there is $600 or $700 worth of benefit.  At any rate, while your proposal is interesting, the technology required is expensive and so your system would also be expensive.

In other words, what price range are you shooting for?

That is an important question to answer before asking whether people would be interested.

As jc343 suggested, as far as I know, this already exists. Of course not for the Wii, but what's the difference? Maybe you could clear that up so you can get better suggestions.

Good luck!

We already have the  Wii guitar, Wii steering wheel and 4 Wii remotes floating around the living room along with a DDR for playstation.  I am thinking the bike would take up a considerable amount more room than any of the other accessories.  Although initially I was interested and clicked on the post because I thought there was one out as well - like mentioned above.   I don't think I would want one, though.  I think I would rather use the bike at the gym and keep fold up compact accessories such as the fold up DDR pad in my living room.  Now if you could find a way to keep it very compact you would have my interest.

I think this is a great idea!!  Perhaps you could also include a function that does a partner workout.  For example, a husband and wife could ride together or a mother and child or even all 3?  Maybe even a different trails/scenerys as well as races.   This would be great for families who say wouldnt be able to do these activities say during the winter or incliment weather.  So much potential.  Good luck!

My sister is a fitness instrustor and she just ordered the wii fitness.  I know she would love your idea, as well as my older parents (mid 70's) who use the excuse they cant get thier walk in due to crappy weather (but do use a stationary bike).  I also would say my 5 nephews, ages 5-10 would also like it...............so I really think you would reach a variety of ages.

I am suprised others have not given an oppinion.

Take care, and Best of luck on this project.

Let us know how you make out?

My thoughts exactly.  I just spent a few hours on the bike today but having one hooked up to the Wii would rock!  It would be especially cool if you could hook 2 of them up...I always ride with my hubby and we get fairly competitive about it, so the idea sounds awesome to me!

You should see my house. (or not really lol)  The dining room is essentially where we have our gym/fitness equipment.  The table and chairs have been retired to the basement.  We have our weight machine, free weights, elliptical and bicycles right in the middle of the dining room.  Not to mention the things we use less often like the rollerblades and the like.  I also plan to haul the coffee table out of the living room so when I want to pull the elliptical in front of the tv it is easier.  I do it now but its a tight squeeze.  Anyhow, my point is another bike or 2 sitting around in my house wouldn't suprise anyone who knows us.  And those that don't know us don't really matter.

Here is a bit from another webpage that reviewed a product based on this idea, but not for the Wii.

"It's available with a choice of two saddles - a cushy wide one for those who like to ride comfortably, and an ergonomic racing saddle for those who are more accustomed to riding a road bike. But unlike stationary bikes, the handlebars turn left and right, just as they do on a regular bicycle. You can't raise or lower the handlebars, so you'll have to ride in an upright position. A knob below the handlebars controls a gear shift with (gasp!) 30 gears.

You can choose from 20 routes or virtual worlds. Some are based on real-life routes mapped with a global positioning system. A basic ride takes you along the California coastline for a mile. A moderate course weaves through rocky canyons. A more extreme course snakes through star-filled outer space.

The visuals and courses are a substantial leap from their predecessors, though not as sophisticated as some of the latest video games. The leaves on trees sway as you pass by. The view of the road, as it unfolds ahead of you, is exactly what you would see if you were riding a bike up or down winding roads. You don't lose (or gain) points by running into a squirrel crossing the road or against a wall. You never crash against the barriers even if something or someone distracts you. You can customize the pace to suit your fitness level by adjusting the speed of the pace rider."

My bf traded our wii so he could buy GTA 4 on the play station 3 needless to say not happy as I really wanted the wii board.

I would love to get a bike for it if I still had the wii though but it sounds expensive or at least to my budget. Iv always though of nintendo as been one of the most affordable consoles anyway Of all the major new consoles available at the moment wii is the least expensive. I think it would help that excercise bikes seem to one of the least expensive items to buy for excercise equipment too so perhaps this makes it a good partner.

Also it would need to be strong enoght to handle a heavy body weigth as I would imagine its going to be aimed at those who are looking to lose. When I got my eliptical trainer I was worried that it could handle a maximum of 200 lb and at the time I was 192lb but i dont know how this would work with a bike I think the weigth distribution is diffrent anyway.

Anyway I think it would make for a great video game with free ride options gta style minus the shooting ppl of course. Also racing, up hill mountain biking, even a spinning class with some sgnt major guy shouting at you to cycle harder. you could have a fitness test too which would probably be more accurate than the wii sports one as its sooo easy to cheat with that.

i think in reality whilst i would like to have one i would be unlikly to buy one

1 it sounds like one expensive piece of equipment

2 I dont have the room

I think it's a great idea.  If I were shopping for an exercise bike I'd be interested in it.  It would be nice to have the Wii display some scenery going by, or since it's a game system they would no doubt make some kind of a game out of it which would make the time pass by a lot faster when on the bike for a while.  It would also have an advantage over a computer program as it would usually be a lot easier to set up a bike in your living room in front of the TV vs. putting one up in your room or study in front of a desktop.

Good idea, but I think for it to be great, you would ride it with the screen playing in the glasses you would wear that completely enclosed your eyes, to give you that true virtual experience.   ...but I guess that is a bit beyond the Wii!

Good luck.  You will have to not only design the bike, but design a program for the Wii to interact with it, then hack the Wii to run the program.  Probably not going to happen anytime soon...might want to look into another project or platform.

I don't think it's a designers job to do all that. Maybe only the design...

I saw something like that on a british programme 'something for the weekend'. Unfortunatly I cant find a link to exactly what they showed, but heres anothe rlink I found for you, I think it would be a fab idea, especially if you could design it for the Wii!!!
