Wii Boxing ....Anyone?

Quote  |  Reply

So my husband brought home a Wii yesterday morning. I'm not really much of a video gamer (but more than most sorta kinda-ers).. so his goal was to get something a 3-year-old could master ie me.

I gave it a shot and I think it's pretty cool. We've got the Wii sports and then he picked up a copy of Zelda because normally he plays the games and I tell him how to approach each puzzle... interesting reasons as to why people get married!! ;) j/k

Anywho.. to get to the point! One of the games we tried, and ended up playing for an hour.. was boxing!! It's a lot of fun! And I thought to myself.. if I like it, why not keep doing it? You have to get off your behind for this one! After an hour we were both in dire need of a shower. Can I count this as exercise? If you're able to get into it, it really gets you going!  What do you guys think? I've heard of people using DDR solely as a work-out.. which I play that on occassion as well with the hubby. How would you enter something like that into your log?

Thanks!!

I love DDR! It's really good for my caves, if I do that for a few hours I can really feel it, and if your sweating that much from wii boxing, I would take it you're doing something good for your body!  I would only occasionally repace ddr or wii boxing for a workout, because you're depending on to few muscle groups.  When we work out we do a veriety of exersizes, working certian muscle groups and our cadiovascular system.  Those games are fun and work some muscles, but not as much as you would with a proper work out regime.  So, if it's a rainy day and you just don't feel like going out, those games are pretty fun!  DDR can measure your caloric expediture, I don't know about wii boxing, but if it's fun I'd keep doing it.

It's better then sitting around watching TV!

I too am a Wii fanatic.  My wife got mine for me for Christmas and I did the Wii fit age test and I was like 38 or something like that, way out of shape and I am 29.  I knew I was bad but it was kind of a wake up call, now I am 23 as of yesterday.  I am not sure how to log this either.  But if you take 60 balls in batting practice a few rounds of boxing and some vigorous tennis, it is a great work out, an hour just fly's by.  I don't have a heart rate monitor but if some does that has one maybe measure it to see what the heart rate comes out too, this might give us a clue where to put it.  I like to use this as an addition to my normal work outs kind of like a work out treat.

um ... just say boxing as in punching bag??? I have never really done a punching bag but I do know that you can really get into the boxing in the wii where you are covered in sweat and can start to feel it in your arms!
I would definitely count the Wii boxing game as exercise!  My boyfriend and I have a Wii, and I break a pretty mean sweat when I "box."  Try the training session where you have to knock the punching bags down... You'll start feeling it in your abs, too!
Boxing is great, my grandson beats the crap out of me,

Try the tennis, I sprained my shoulder.

I actually use the boxing as my workout on days I don't go jog.  I put on some loud music, dance around like a goofball between rounds, and I count it as "Low impact aerobics."

Anyone done both so you can tell me if it's really comparable?

I have never tried the training session, but i will definitely have to check that out! Whenever i play against my boyfriend he always beats me so I find myself punching ten times harder so i can kick his butt, but it never works! hah, atleast i break a sweat! Laughing
I have not tried the boxing yet.  I always do the tennis.  I will defineatly have to do that when I can not go to the gym.

Thanks for the article, it was nice to see some on took the time to do a study on it.  You could definitely see a difference after the six weeks. Also Wii has a fitness board coming out soon that you will be able to stand on and mimic skiing and it is supposed to have a yoga program too, lots to look forward too.  And lets not forget DDR; I still got to get that.

Definitely! We're taking a break from the Wii Sports tonight because we're both soo sore! I usually hop on my stationary bike for 30 minutes 6 days a week.. I just need a way to mix it up so I'm glad to hear that the boxing is a semi-valid stand in. What I have been doing is if I chose boxing -- we'll do that between 45mins to an hour and then I'll cut my stationary down to about 15 minutes. Last night we did about 15 minutes of boxing, 15 minutes of bowling then about 10 minutes each of baseball and tennis (fun!!).  I also do DDR on occassion -- but I'm not the most coordinated of the bunch so I don't really count it as exercise.. more of a comedic routine :)

And YES! I'm so excited for the Fit game/board to come out! As soon as DH saw the ad we've both been pretty pumped up for it. I don't know that it will replace my regular exercises but I'm quite thrilled at the idea of being able to do something FUN and round out my workouts!

I know a man who lost 60 pounds playing Wii! I LOVE Boxing/Bowling/Baseball -- and I'm SORE the days after i play. Stretch out before and after and DEFINITELY count it as exercise!

Has anyone tried the new dancing thing? The one that comes with the pad for your feet? That's my next purchase for sure!

 Edit because I just realized that's the DDR. Duh, and ignore this posting!  (;

yup the ddr for the wii is really fun. Takes a while to get use to, but definitely burns a lot of calories!!

The training is just like real life it is harder than the game.  Batting practice for BB is 30 pitches do that three times in a row and let me know how your arms feel. :)  I like the training because you get to compete against your self and beat your own records; I am a competitive person so this is definitely a plus.
