To Wii or not to Wii

Quote  |  Reply

I have been using Wii Fit for about 5 weeks and I really like it.  I do the yoga every day and the strenght training on my days off from the gym.  My family and I also play some balance games and cardio for fun.  Does anyone have an opinion concerning the benifit of the Wii?  Am I wasting my time?  I'm having fun, but it would be more fun if I knew I was doing some good.

I started using the Wii Fit about a month ago.  I have noticed a better posture and I have noticed that I feel more energetic when I wake up.  If it is beneficial or not?  I'm certainly no expert on this, but I would think that any movement is beneficial.  Hope you continue and see great results!

How beneficial it is depends on what the alternative would be.

If you're replacing time sitting on the couch with playing the wii, it's definitely better for you.  If you would have been outside playing or working out at the gym it's probably not as good.

I have had my Wii Fit since January and I love....love....love....it!  I do all of the yoga, strength and aerobics 4 to 5 times a week.  I wouldn't be the type of person to go to a gym so this is perfect for me.  Prior to getting the Wii I would come home from work and sit and watch TV.  On the days that I don't use it I really miss it.  I have only lost 4 lbs...but I definatly notice that I have toned up, my cellulite has decreased and my butt has really firmed up.  I have about 10lbs to go, but I like what it has done for me so far.

Hi mccshark,

The Wii Fit is definitely beneficial as an adjunct to the gym and other forms of physical activity.  I am working on my doctorate in physical therapy at the moment, and we are currently doing several studies on the effectiveness of the Wii Fit in adults and children, and the results are astounding.  The postural and stability improvements alone are enough to make this game worth having and using.  Improving posture and stability will lead to safer techniques during workouts as well as a decreased risk of injury.

So keep doing what you're doing!

If you're going to play a video game, then playing one while moving and having fun is so much more beneficial than playing one sitting down or lying in bed! It can not be a substitute or  have the advantages of working out at a gym but it certainly beats doing nothing!  And, you're having fun.  In a time when childhood obesity is at all time highs, Wii Fit has foundthat happy medium; active video game play.   Movement, any kind at all, is great.

I use my wii fit for the strength training. I find it better than doing reps on machines at the gym. Ive noticed more of an improvement also than when I was strength training at the gym. I cant replace my gym cardio with the wii cardio though. Its just not worth it. It is good for the rainy days when I dont want to leave my house. Boxing on there is great. I also like the wii sports that came with my wii. I need to invest in getting Mario tennis.

Wow I have to say all the positive comments on here are encouraging.  My fiance and I were talking about getting a Wii and the Wii Fit.  He likes the video games and I want something that will help me work out.  We are not very active and I have 5 kids so going to the Gym is hard.  Sometimes just going for a walk is hard.  After reading all of your posts I will feel better about spending the money one the Wii Fit for myself (I have no doubts that my fiance and kids will use the Wii till it has paid for it self).  I am also looking forward to Spring and working in my yard but the Wii Fit seems to be a good investment for when I am needing something to do in the house.  Thank you all for you comments.

I got my Wii for Christmas and also love it! Can I ask how many times you repeat the yoga poses? Are there any guidelines you know of? The fun poses I will do several times, but others, one time and I'm done with that one. Just trying to get a feel of how long others are actually doing the poses.

Thanks!

I do each pose once unless I totally mess up and have to repeat.  I don't do the deep breathing.  I do the yoga every day and it adds up to 30 credits.
