Wii Fit vs other exercise methods, What do you think?

Quote  |  Reply

I think the Wii Fit has some pretty neat activities and features. The weight and BMI measurements are mostly what I use my Wii Fit for. The funny thing is a rarely use the Wii Fit for exercise, just because I feel some of the activities are "time consuming". This year for my 30th birthday, my husband got me a treadmill. Then he got me the Wii Fit for Mother's Day (actually a week after, because it wasn't out yet), I tease him that he's going to give me a complex with all the weight loss/fitness stuff. LOL! However, my video game junkie son LOVES to get on the Wii Fit and "play." Sometimes during the mid-morning, it's just too hot for the kids to play outside, and the Wii Fit gives them something different to do. I hope none of you think I allow my kids to sit inside all day and play video games - though if I let them they would - at about 3 PM each day my kids are outside swimming, and the sun's not so hot.  I can't think of any other indoor activities that my active 3 sons could do other than reading, that would be as productive as the Wii Fit when it is so hot.

I just bought my children the Wii.  I was interested in getting the fit, but they didn't have any in stock.  I had a few questions so I'm glad I read the post.  Is it a program, what does it include and the cost??  I love any additional info you could give me.

Thanks

For kids, it's a videogame that's "active".  I read an article that you shouldn't enter a child's stats in there because some normal-sized children are labeled "fat" by the game.  Just keep it a game for them.

There are quite a few threads in this forum about Wii Fit.  We're saving up for one but for now, I take my son swimming for a few hours a day.

It's fairly expensive, like other Wii games.  It's $90!!  We got Guitar Hero and my son beat the game a long time ago and doesn't play it anymore.  It was around $90 too.  I think it includes that thing you stand on which acts as a step, a board, different stuff and even a scale.  I'm not sure what it all entails.

Wii Fit is a great source of light exercise. I wouldn't replace it instead of weight training or jogging, but if you're in a pinch (or just lazy), it's great!

Jenjeg, You will NOT find the Wii Fit for $90 - and if you do, you're very lucky. They're going for upwards of $180! =O

It's not really a program, more like a bunch of yoga & strength training exercises available. You do what you want, when you want.

I asked them at Game Stop how much it would be and it was $90.

I had a baby in January this year and am using the Wii fit & a treadmill to help lose inches/pounds. The Wii fit is good as the aerobic/fat burning exercises get the heart rate up which can only be good for you. To date doing 18+ minutes of step, 6 minutes hula & up to 20 mins jogging (either Wii or treadmill) has shown a drop of 4.5 inches around the waist so something is working. My next thing is to make a step to stand the board on to increase the height to provide a more intense step workout whilst also adding weights (hand held or wrist/ankle bands) as seen on the biggest loser. Hopefully all this will help the inches roll off ;-) Incidentally in the UK they recently reviewed the Wii versus traditional gym equipment on the Gadget show and it came out favourably on the stamina/endurance tests.

it is a good way to assess balance and what you can work on... i think for a kid it beats just sitting there and it gives little fitness tips..

the scale is extremely accurate- or at least in my case.... I've said it before on another post, but it suggests to hold a known weight (I used a 10 lbs dumbell) to make sure it is working correctly and it says "i think you are holding something" and then it tells you it detects the object as 10.0 lbs... pretty cool

edit: we got the wii for 80 and the fit for 70

I know, that's suggested retail, but they're all sold out across the nation. People are pawning them off online for over $130.

Hello,

I found the Wii Fit yesterday (June 29) at Target for $89. We had to get there before opening on Sunday and they had enough in for everyone waiting.

I suggest checking the Target Sunday ads and heading there in the early a.m. You should be successful with this route. We thought we would end up paying alot more, but lucked out.

Have you noticed the Hula is great for abs and legs?

I'm addicted to the wii fit.  I've had it since it was released May 21 and have lost 20 pounds.  Love the boxing!!  Added wrist weights and recently upgraded the weights.  Like the running/stepping I can do while I watch my favorite show for 30 minutes in the evening.

I really like how it tracks my progress and I can look at the graph.  Also the BMI tool seems really accurate.  Right before I bought the fit, I went to a nutritionist who measured my BMI with wires and measurements and a little machine.  The fit gave me the same result the nutritionist gave me and was much faster, easier, cheaper, and more private!
