I have been calorie counting and working out for about 2.5 months now. I usually have between a 400 and 700 calorie deficiet every weekday and tend to break even on the weekends or have a small deficiet. I workout 6 days a week for either 30 minutes or 60 minutes depending on my schedule and am an elementary school teacher. However, I haven't lost any weight and am very frustrated.
On almost a daily basis I drink two glasses of white wine. I always count it in my calories. I picked up the habit last summer and I just figured that as long as I had a calorie deficiet I would still be losing.
Could the wine be preventing me from losing any weight?
I heard wine can slow your metabolism, but I don't think up to 400 calories worth....maybe you're overestimating exercise or underestimating food calories?
Metabolism, liver function, insulin production.....whatever. I don't know exactly what goes on when alcohol hits the system but I'm convinced that wine is more than just calories.... if you understand. I have certainly found, from my own experience, that dropping wine consumption down to just 2 glasses a week from maybe 6 a week has had a disproportionately positive effect on my weight. Much more than losing a few hundred calories would suggest on paper. NB... Two home-poured glasses of white wine is going to be quite a lot of alcohol.... and obviously that has other health implications beyond a bit of excess flab.
My suggestion would be to go for one whole week without wine completely. This will do several things for you. First it will break what is basically just a bad habit. Second, it will mean you have to find other things to drink in the evening and other ways to wind down. Third, by the end of the week you'll be able to see if it's made a difference to your weight.
As a final suggestion, try to keep your deficit to 500-700 cals a day, every day and maybe have a day where you eat more just once every two or three weeks rather than every weekend. Consistency is effective when it comes to weight-loss.
I agree with Jane, In my experience the most effective things i've dont to manage my weight is really limit my alcohol consumption. I know that theoretically weightloss is designed around 'calories in vs calories out' etc, but alcohol seems to do weird things to me and I gain weight alot more easily when I drink.
Yes! I was the same, I would eat perfect and workout like a fiend and never really was honest about my evening wine. When I cut it out of my diet (once a week tops) it made a big difference, and fairly quickly.
I have given up regular beer, and hunt down the 64 calorie beer (MGD). However, it only really helps if you drink less than 2 a day.
