Winter fitness?
Hey fellow Chicagoans,
I'm sure everyone's noticed the gross weather we've been having lately; I even saw a "flood watch" warning on LSD yesterday, which is pretty disheartening for mid-September! And unfortunately, it's going to get worse before it gets much better... apparently, this is supposed to be one of the worst winters in Chicago history.
Which brings me to a dilemma: I've been getting most of my exercise from walking. And I mean walking from Hyde Park to Printers' Row, or South Loop to Ravenswood - serious walking. The kind of walking I'm just not willing to do in the snow, or really in the rain most of the time. I have access to a gym on campus, and I'm planning to make friends with the treadmill/bike, but I'm curious as to what other people are doing to avoid falling off the exercise wagon when it gets too nasty to go outside. (Maybe I can snag a few tips!)
Thoughts?
last winter i spent all my time in a gym. I wound up having too many "aww screw it" nights and staying in when I should have braved the blizzard outside... to sit on a stationary bike and a treadmill.
The apartment complex i'm moving to in november has a gym on site and it's very barebones but I bet it will be very popular. I'm planning on getting a bike trainer for my bike and plopping that in front of the TV. I don't have a problem jogging in the cold but biking in the cold can turn from uncomfortable to downright deadly in a few seconds. (Ice) Swimming? Well I plan on doing that 100% indoors thank you very much.
Hey Nassira! I rode my treadmill all winter last year. This year I plan on doing more of the same but I'm also adding a couple things. One thing I'll be adding is the Wii Fit. I bought it a couple months ago but after doing it for a couple weeks I decided I'd put it away and use it when it became necessary to stay indoors. I don't want to grow tired of it too quickly. That's an expensive option though! The other thing I'm planning on is much much cheaper. I went onto the Chicago Park District website and looked for indoor pools. It turns out (I already partly knew this) that my old high school has open swim for adults and open swim for families several times a week and it is FREE!!! I am definitely going to take advantage of that. I started to do that in the spring but when summer hit I opted for outdoor stuff. You better believe I'll be starting back up again very soon. Remember, not only parks can have indoor pools!!!
