Wintry Hot Beverages
Does anyone have any of their own recipes for wintry hot beverages that they'd like to share?
I make my own kind of hot chocolate. I use:
1 tbsp liquid honey (60 calories approx)
1 square of chocolate from Lindt 90% cacao bar (53 calories approx)
1 cup / 250 mL So Nice Vanilla Soy Beverage (100 calories approx)
I put it all into a pot and turn to max temperature so that the mixture boils. As it's heating up, I continually stir until all of the chocolate melts. It's important to stay there the whole time because the mixture will expand and flow over the pot and on to the stove. If I need more time for the chocolate to melt, I turn it down and keep stirring (and lifting the pot up from the heat when it starts to expand). Then I pour it all into a little mug when it's done!
It's perfect for anyone who loves really sweet flavour and chocolate! I use soy because I'm lactose intolerant and also because I think milk is gross, but milk or soy would be fine, and whatever brand you like best would do.
I drink this when I feel like I need something really sweet. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't like sugar much, or to anyone who gets pain in their teeth from sugar.
Anyone else?
P.S. If you wanted to make it less sweet, you could just take out the honey!
My cocoa is made cocoa powder because it's virtually fat free and has very intense dark chocolate flavor.
the recipe is
1/4 cup water
1 to 2 Tablespoons of cocoa
sweetener of your choice, to taste
1 cup fat free milk.
Put the water and cocoa in a 2 cup glass measureing cup. Microwave it for 1 minute until it foams up. Stir and microwave 15 seconds to cook the cocoa. Add the milk and sweetner, stir and microwave until it reaches serving temperature. Pour into a mug and enjoy. Sometimes I put in a few drops of vanilla extract at the end, or cook the cocoa with a touch of cinnamon.
I like Coconut milk for my hot cocoa.
1 tbsp cocoa powder
1 can coconut milk
1 tbsp maple syrup
Mix well with a blender. When it's all mixed just heat until it is nice and toasty.
Simmer unfiltered apple juice on the stove with a stick of cinnamon (add cloves and nutmeg if you want). It makes the whole house smell good, you can do as much or as little as you want, and it's warm and comforting.
sounds kinda strange but....
use strawberry milk instead of regular plain milk
sprinkle in nutmeg
heat on the stove and top with a bit of whipped cream
yum!!

You can make hot apple cider like that too. Just heat the cider on the stove with cinnamon and cloves. Maybe add a little cranberry juice or real cranberries for a tang. Then drink.
There is also a German hot wine drink which I forget the name of but it smells (and I assume tastes) really good. I have never had it...first I was underage and now I have cirrhosis.
EDIT: it is called Gluehwien (pronounced: GLYOO-vine) -->
24 oz german red wine
1 cup water
1 whole cinnamon stick
2 whole cloves
1/2 a lemon, thinly sliced
1/3 cup sugar
Mix everything together in a saucepan or crock pot.
Heat over low medium heat until hot, BUT NOT BOILING! **Boiling will ruin it**
You may put it into a crock pot on LOW and serve it warm. (Even make it in the crock pot on LOW)
