Wisdom and Parenting - Devotion

God is the source of all wisdom, but there are many avenues of giving and receiving it. One is teaching it as parents, grandparents, relatives, teachers, or neighbors to children. Wisdom is to be taught in word and deed in the form of doctrine - what we believe. Teach a child what to believe and reinforce it with showing them how to behave. Otherwise, a parent teaches a child only how to behave, and when they grow older, not knowing why they should behave, they often walk headlong into rebellion and destruction. I see it so often now even in Christian circles. Parents want to be a child's buddy, instead of a leader and parent in their life. They do not need another buddy - they need a loving, wise, mentor/leader; who can teach them what to do and why it is to their benefit to do it. That mentor/leader must also be honest about their own failures and weakness, fears and failures. Otherwise, the child has no discipline, few boundaries, no responsibilities, no work ethic, and when they mess up - it is "always someone else' fault". If you have children or opportunities to influence them - influence them with wisdom, in the form of spoken and lived-out doctrine. Hear ye my children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know wisdom. For I give you good doctrine, forsake not my law...He taught me also and said unto me, let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from words of my mouth (Proverbs 4.1-5).
