Wisdom teeth!

Quote  |  Reply

I am getting my wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow.  Thankfully I only have two of them but they on opposite sides of my mouth with one on top and one on the bottom (how nice).  I go in at 7:30 am and can't eat/drink anything for 6 hrs beforehand.  I can only assume that I WILL get hungry eventually tomorrow.  Anyone who has been through this:  What are some easy things to eat? Applesauce?  Oatmeal?  I just don't know how I will be feeling or how much pain I will be in.  Thanks!!

The dentist should have some suggestions. All I remember is - don't use a straw.

I got it done a couple of years ago.  i don't really remember much of it because I was so drugged up.  Mine had already grown in, so it wasn't as invasive as usual.  I seriously don't remember eating much.  I felt really nauseous from the meds and from all the blood I was swallowing and didn't want to eat anything for a while.  The first day you will sleep a lot, so hunger won't really be an issue.  I think the next couple days I ate stuff like tomato soup and yogurt.

i had all four out, and i had a pretty rough time of it when it came to healing. i think i might have been the worst case scenario, so don't be too worried.

anyway, the first day, the one thing that went down easiest was milkshakes. definitely don't use a straw! you really need to get something down before you take the pain meds they give you. i didn't eat enough before taking them and they made me sick to my stomach.

i would't eat oatmeal the first day, cause it'll get stuck in your stiches and stuff.

applesauce, mashed potatoes made thin, and cream of wheat were also easy for me to eat.

 Great tips! Thanks.

Try not to eat anything sugary, as you cant brush/rinse for the first day or two. Sugar free jello and pudding are your best friends. Yoghurt and I also remember having some mashed up banana by my second day. Also try apple sauce and those weight loss energy drinks, Ensures, etc. And as mentioned above - NO STRAWS!

Don't worry, it'll be a lot better than you think. I had two of mine removed (still waiting for the next two next insurance year ;P) and I only had local anasthetic. And personally, though I'm SUPER sensitive to pain, I stopped using painkillers after the second day. This is the same girl who cries when she bumps her knee :)

When I got mine taken out (3 total, impacted, I randomly just didn't have a fourth one) I had a huge Wendy's Vanilla frosty with a spoon.  Just what the doctor ordered.  If there's any time to treat oneself, it's after minor outpatient oral surgery :)

I remember having rice an hour or so after I got mine out (all 4) and other stuff that I don't remember.  Back to real food the next day, I just had to squish it really small because my jaw was so swolen I could barely open my mouth.

You can't really chew, and as long as your lips are still numb you can't really keep the food IN your mouth either. The doctor will tell you what you're allowed, mostly mushy stuff. I don't remember wanting to eat at all the first day. You will be too drugged to know you're hungry.

Chicken soup, yogurt, chocolate pudding, and jello were my meals for a couple of days after the surgery.  It's funny though, because during the recovery period you actually don't seem to feel as hungry as you do normally, so it's actually not too bad having mostly liquids for the first few of days.

Hope that helps!  You're surgery will go great (mine was much easier than I had been expecting) and you'll be back to eating all of your yummy foods in no time! Cool

After having mine done (all 4), I thought I was going to be hungry after too. I was no where near hungry after. :P I wanted to puke from the medication and I wanted to sleep.

When I did get to eat, I had soup, cream of wheat, pudding, jello, applesauce, and scrambled eggs. No straws, sip stuff, no sucking or you risk getting dry socket which is extremely painful. I had stitches across the roof of my mouth, all 4 were impacted and very difficult to get out. So I was in pain for a couple of weeks after. I am SO glad they are gone though, those toothaches were awful.

I was also swollen and looked like a hamster!

About six years ago I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled at the same time! For me it was worse than giving birth to my sons!  You will have to rinse with salt water for the blood and to dissolve your stitches! I am sure your dentist will have all that info!  I ate creamed spinach, mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes, tomato soup and any other soup that is just broth. Believe me for the first 24 to 48 hours food will be the last thing on your mind.  After my surgery I was laughing one minute and crying the next! (the drugs were good!)  Sweet dreams!!

So I just had an endoscopy yesterday which required me not to eat anything for 8 hrs before hand... and my appointment was at noon - so basically I didn't eat since the night before @ 7... and I  couldn't drink anything either which was the WORST and me being the weirdo that I am... went to the gym and tried to work out but it was just SO PAINFUL! At least your appointment is at 7:30 AM!!! You should be perfectly fine and afterward you may be too drugged up to think about food but when you do get that urge to eat: soft whole grain bread would probably be your best bet... When I got all 4 of my wisdoms out... yea I was stupid and went right back to my normal diet... and what do you know, I had dry-sockets and infections!! ha ha! Whoops!

I worked in an Oral Surgery office for 6 years. We used to tell our patients cold soft foods for the first day.  Shakes, ice cream, jello, applesauce, yogurt, etc.  Warm soft foods the next day. Avoid anything "pokey" (chips, nuts, popcorn, etc) for awhile. Definitely avoid a straw for at least a week. That suction can wreak havoc on your incision sights.  Most importantly- since you wont have a lot in your stomach, have something to eat before you take the pain meds.  Preferably something dairy.  Those meds have a tendency to be a little harsh on an empty stomach!

From personal experience: I would try not to eat anything you have to chew while you are numb.  Cocky girl that thought she knew what she was doing ate french fries and bit my lip and cheek more thank once :-)

Upper extractions are easier than lowers, so you got lucky :-)  I only had two and mine were both uppers.  Good luck!

Wisdom teeth are out!  I think the drugs that they gave me made me feel worse than the actual surgery.  Oxycodone?  Really?  I rarely even take aspirin for heachaches!  I took my pills with some vanilla smoothie stuff for the first two sessions and was ok.  In the evening I was done laying around in bed and zoning out I got up and was feeling pretty lightheaded and decided to have some soup!  About five spoonfuls later I ran to the bathroom deposited it all into the toilet.  No more drugs for me.  I am a total lightweight, the laughing gas almost put me to sleep!

Now I am just taking some ibuprofen and was able to eat some yogurt and some sweet potato this morning and I feel way less out it, if not in slightly more pain!

Thanks for all the support and stories!
