Wisdom Teeth & Gaining

Quote  |  Reply

Over a year ago (before recovery) I got my bottom wisdom teeth out and couldn't eat for like 3 or 4 days...I only would have 1/2 a mashed banana to eat with the anitbiotic. I'll be having the rest of my wisdom teeth out very soon (three top ones...cause somehow I have three up there 0_o).

I'm really scared about what's going to happen with my calorie intake during this time. I always lose my appetite, plus last year I was in maaaad pain and discomfort, after these procedures/during antibiotics.

According to the surgeon, I should limit my sugar intake while the wounds are open as well. I was planning to have Ensures or Boost (not sure which is better) during these days (even though that's still like 10 a day to match my intake), but they also have a lot of sugar...

Anyone with experience have any good suggestions to keep my calories up? Would it be the worst if my calories dropped a bit during this time (I reeeeally don't wanna resort to this. I'm scared I won't bring them up afterwards :S).

I got my wisdom teeth out while I was gaining, too. I got no warning about sugar, just about straws :-).

It is very possible to eat enough during those days. I wasn't hungry, but I wasn't hungry during early refeeding either.

The focus should be on dense and soft... such as:

-ice cream

-milkshakes

-smoothies

-mashed potatoes

-yogurt

-oatmeal with pb, banana, etc MASHED in

-creamy soups

-eggs

Lots of options, and most of them are tasty!

Yeah I remember mentioning to my dad while we were in the room w/ the surgeon that I was gonna be wanting a LOT of icecream ..(pre ed :( ). And the surgeon was like NO there's too much sugar and you shouldnt get sugar in the wounds, plus you cant brush for a few days...etc etc. So idk...

i had my wisdom tooth out while gaining i managed ok just swopped to foods like sup mashed potatoe oatmeal that was easy to swallow . i hope all goes well , i was unfortunate to get dry socket whih wasnt nice h x

nope...never heard the sugar thing but i guess i'll humor the doctor...lol

1. mashed potatoes...homemade with heavy cream and butter!!! :)

2. mashed bananas with peanut butter mixed in

3. tons of peas...mash them if you have to

4. cream soups...like cream if broccoli, cream of potato...with cheese mixed in

5.  quinoa with pesto sauce

6. couscous with olive oil and parmesan cheese

7. oatmeal--made with milk

8. cream of wheat

--hope this helps :)

I guess Ill be eating Sh*tloads of mashed potatos!! Haha, thanks all : )

I had all four of my wisdom teeth taken out at once, about 4 years ago now.

I remember existing on pureed fruit (so no warnings about excess suger for me), mashed potato, mashed banana, etc...

It was hard enough because I was right in the middle of my strictest restricting period, so I'm afraid to say it took longer to get over the surgery than it should have done, and it was literally months before I could pluck up the courage to eat solid food again, even thoughs strictly speaking I was ready.

I did lose weight then - even more!! - and I remember my mum commenting on the fact that I gotten even thinnner.

Sorry to sound so negative izzyy, but that was my personal experience.

I can't add any more suggestions to what has already been posted here.

Just wanted to say good luck - and just think how much less pain you'll be in when you have those last two teeth out. Smile

I had all four of mine out in one go, they were surgically removed, gums cut open, teeth pulled out, gums stitched back together, so no open wounds.

I remember being able to eat relatively normally again after the first day or so. I know for sure that i had noodles for tea the night i had the surgery.

I wasnt warned about sugar either but i do remember having to do salt water rinses after every time i ate. Surprisingly, I dont remember it hurting at all.

I have a few more, low/no sugar suggestions:

Omlettes with egg yokes and whites. I make omlettes with milk and cheese mixed in so they are pretty calorie dense. You could also add a variety of vegges to this.

Could you try making your own version of ensure without the sugar. For example - Full fat milk, protein powder (not sure about sugar content) and coffee. MMmmmmmm coffee milkshake!!

OOOOOOOO i remember as a kid, my mum would make baked pumpkin, kumera (sweet potato) and potato. I would mash it all together on my plate. So so yummy. So i guess a different version of mashed potato.

Cant think of any more ideas right now, sorry, but hope this helped

Granted they have high natural sugar, but I remember when I got mine out I ate lots of fruit smoothies.

Also, mashed veggies. You can totally make carrots or cauliflower mashed like potatoes and they are awesome. That was def. one of my first meals after I got mine out, my mum made me mashed carrots, yum!

And brothy soup. Or cream of soups. Like cream of potato.

Bread was the worst though, so hard to chew for like a week.

I had 4 of mine out during a past regaining and still gained. I was very focused at that time. I also was allergic to the antibiotic so I had an upset stomach and a rash. I don't mean to be harsh but there can always be a reason to not do. Yes this is hard but I am sure if I said here is a million dollars if you complete the mp you would do it so why is your health any different. Ok some food suggestions.

I went to Panera and got creamy soups then took there bread and let it get mushy

Mac and cheese

I only heard for the first day no dairy so I ate things like ice cream and milkshakes

Why not ensure or boost? A few of those can help with calories

Pancakes and french toast just don't overcook

Chicken pot pie

Cereal and let it get soggy

Pasta with butter

rice with butter,cheese sauce,etc

When I had mine out, I ate a lot of fudgsicles- my dr did not say anything about sugar.  Could you maybe get a second opinion about the sugar?

If you do avoid sugar, you can go with high-fat options.

Peanut butter (or almond butter) and banana smoothies, heavy on the nut butter - add in some whole milk or cream if you can.

Cream-based soup.

Oatmeal - cook it in whole milk, half and half (= single cream, I think), or heavy cream (= double cream, I think). Swirl in some nut butter too! You could try cooking it in coconut milk.

Rice pudding - again, cook in cream, or in coconut milk.

You can probably eat scrambled eggs, at least after the first day - cook in butter or olive oil.

Full-fat greek yogurt, full-fat cottage cheese

Mashed avocado / guacamole

Damn, I can't eat eggs (allergy), but puddings and cold mashed taters will be my sustinence for a while...Im just scared of getting better and being scared to go back to "real" food...if that makes any sense. :S

No, what do you mean??

Im reading this as, you will have to eat soft foods for a few days and you are scared that when you have healed enough to eat a normal diet again, that you will be too scared to. Why???? Is that fear related to pain, or the ED voice. If its ED related then this is something you need to discuss with a T or your GP. If thoughts like these then you need to work more on your mental recovery, in addition to your nutritional recovery.

@kayeanne - yeah it's the ED voice...and yeah it's something i'm still working on...everyday : )
