As I was perusing this site, I couldn't help but notice that almost all the people who use this site are women.  I see very few men.  Don't men get fat?  Of course they do.  My guess is that (and I mean this with no malice) women tend to be a little vain with regard to the way they look because for centuries men have placed an emphasis on beauty rather than on more desirable traits.  Also, I think men don't see the importance in staying trim and have created a double standard whereby their women must look desirable, while they can look any way they want.  Any comments on this?

I know that many of the Internet forums I've encountered seem to have more women than men as posters ... and sometimes I wonder if it's just a time and access-to-computers thing.

Men get fat too! You have some good points though! I've lost 101 pounds so far! I did it for health and of course for vanity. I wish more men would step up to the plate and take action.
Maybe men are too embarrased to be here.  It's not very manly to count calories.  It's even less manly to talk about it on a weight loss forum.  That only applies to men who care about being "manly" though.

There are quite a few fellas here.  I've noticed that most online communities are women dominated unless it's something manly like tech stuff, video games, or movies etc.
My fiance is on here, but he doesn't use the forums 'cause "forums aren't his thing" and he'd rather be watching This Old House, eating a burger, and asking me to log his calories for him.

There are plenty of guys on here.  But as women, we've turned this whole forum into our own personal hen party.  Dudes are welcomed, they're usually just too afraid of gettin' pecked.

We have plenty of male members who just use the tools.  A few of them are prolific posters, but most don't bother.  I'm in touch with some who journal and they are just as dedicated to getting healthy as women.  I don't know the reason; cellulitedelight is probably right.

And we might also ask, why young people and not old?  There are a large number of senior citizens (like me) who are here but feel overwhelmed by the youth oriented attitude that prevails.  We have new members who ask, plaintively "am I the oldest one here?".

I have a lot of friends on this forum who are men but granted more persons who post are of the female persuasion.  This site however was created by men.

I hope someday more men will partake in the forums - but if you go over to the fitnes forum you will see more men do post over there.

One thing I've noticed is men don't have the same %ages of eatng disorders than females and in the 2 years I've been here it seems a majority of posts are from those -- so maybe that's why we see more females around vs men.

I am a man. I am not afraid of women lol.
I think there are quite a few guys. But I think it also depends on what forums you frequent within the site. More men may post on Fitness rather than say, Weight Loss.

dm84 loves to post in Foods, and does a damn good job I might add :)

I think you are hanging out in forums that are geared toward what are considered to be "women's interests", because this is only the second forum I have ever been on where women outnumber men. All gaming, sporting and electronic forums I go on are almost entirely men with women being the exception rather than norm.

I think women are more likely to connect and seek/provide support.  Women have long been credited with expressing themselves over men but the male members I can relate to perfectly here too so glad theyre aboard.

I'm a man. I have like 700 posts.

I am an anomaly!

*Applauds the men on here*

I agree with the OP. When a man is fat, it's fine and isn't really noticed. But if a woman is fat, not only is it noticed, but it's looked down upon. At least this is how I hear from most people.

Except at Disney and Universal. When I go there, all bets are off and I'm lucky if I see a few people who care to take care of themselves.. Orlando, City Beautiful. :P
Another guy here. I don't have very much time to play on here so I don't post much. I am barely able to log my weight once a week.
It might be the "seeking help" gap (women seek more support from others in difficult situations). And, yes, weight loss is still seen as a more feminine topic, which is ridiculous of course because these guys are dropping like flies from heart disease and diabetes...
I just like lurking. :)

Honestly?

Why women mores so than men?

...because how their prospective mate looks matter so much more on average to men than it does women...

Here's my over simplication...make fun etc as you please but there is a kernel of truth in this...

What Makes a Woman Attractive to a Man

50% Looks + 50% Personality = 100% of the deal

What Makes a Man Attractive to a Woman

40% Confidant + 15% Looks + 20% Wealth & Resources + 25% Personality = 100% of the deal
RE 17: i like those calculations. they look close to true to me.

According to the BBC

Almost two in five (37%) women were dieting most of the time, compared to around just one in six (18%) of men.

So there are more women "dieting" at any one time than there are men, therefore, it would be strange if there were more men or an equal number of men on these boards... It would mean that men like to talk about dieting more than women do.  And considering that women allegedly use 45% more words per day than men, that would really be remarkable!

:)

The reason I use 45% more words is because I have an ex-husband....
