For Women Only...

I have started my diet (and joined the site) in September, but recently really started working out for so than before. For example, I worked out on the stationary bike for 18 minutes (just as a quick workout) and burned 300 calories, while earlier in the day, I worked out for an hour or so and lost 300 calories (so 600 total). Today, I worked out on the stationary bike and burned 800 total.

Anyways, onto my actual question part. I ended my period about a week ago and today, I found a blood-like substance in my urine, much like I was having my period. I am sure it is due to the fact I am losing weight now and working out so much. In fact, this time around, my period lasted a bit longer than it normally does. Has anyone else experienced this? I know it can't be my period again that quickly and read online that sometimes working out can cause irregular periods. How long does it usually last?

The substance is a rather dark colour, almost a really dark red/black colour.

Thanks :)

this may sound weird, but i believe it was old blood left over from your period.  sometimes that happens, and especially if you were working out hard-core, it could have just 'taken its time' to get out...

Are you experiencing any pain?  It could be a symptom of a UTI.

Nope, just the usual cramping a little bit (that I would experience with my period).

Is it in your urine?

I think you're going to have to determine where exactly it's coming from. If you're just spotting, no biggie and it will probably go away in a few days, but if it is actually blood in your urine, you need to see a doctor. Blood in your urine can be a sign of kidney or other problems, some of which are serious if not treated.

I just think it is due to my working out so much. It has seemed to go away since I posted this, but I still have a bit of cramping, so probably just excess blood trying to get out of my body.

It wasn't blood, like a huge amount, just a darker substance, like I normally get when I have my period. But, as someone mentioned earlier, it may just be leftover from before.

This is going to sound really dumb (but it is a huge possibility). Did you eat beets? I know a lot of times my urine will be pink, sometimes even reddish... and because I have an amenorrhea cycle (I work out hard and my low body fat = I have to quit working out and take pills every 3 months to get a period) and I have gotten VERY excited seeing the pink thinking it was my monthly... but alas.

The cramping + spotting might be what loe-loe said... you might be sending your uterus back into contractions and shredding the excess amount of lining inside.... I know working out can really mess up your period and so can dieting. When I do not eat enough during my cycle it will last longer and become much lighter than normal. Then if I eat more it will heavy up and it can stretch out to 5-7 days (normally it's 3 days). Now it's just gone, lol. Used to bug me but now I'm ok with it tho.

Good Luck and if all else fails email your gyno.

Nope, I haven't eaten any beets lately (maybe a month or so ago).

It may just be the other thing though.

I am really worried about it or anything at the moment.

I remember when I was around 12 or so and drank some blue soda and my urine turned out blue, which was very cool at the time.

I wouldn't think it is from exercise. It is very likely "spotting" mid-cycle (if you ended your period a week ago and your periods are about five days long, you may be ovulating soon)  Are you on the pill? Do you take any medication that contains hormones? Have your periods been regular so far? ANY chance you may be/may have been pregnant? (sorry for being obnoxious and nosy, these are just questions to consider, not to answer here)

I would set up an appointment with your ob-gyn, just to make sure there is nothing wrong. If you are actually cramping, it is not just "blood left over", especially not a week after you finished your period.

The answer to all of your questions is no. There is no chance I am pregnant whatsoever (as I am still a virgin), and am not on the pill. I currently don't take any medication.

All seems fine no, so I guess it might have been just extra lining or something, since I am exercising quite a bit daily.
