I'm wondering how menstruation affects everyone's weight loss. Do
you usually gain before, lose after, or the opposite, or something
else? Or maybe it doesn't usually affect you at all.
I've noticed that both months for me, my weight holds VERY steady during this time. But that could be because I grow an appetite, or it could be just a coincidence.

Hello, Yeah right after I started my diet, I lost about 13 lbs right away.
About 5 days later, I had gained back 6lbs. I was nearly hysterical since I had not cheated on my diet once. That night I started my cycle, I think I was probly just bloated, because when my menstration stopped, I was down about 17lbs from the original weight. Very relieving! I had forgotten about Bloating during periods, because I had been on depo for about 5 years (ergo weight gain), with no periods.

I dont find I gain weight, but I do find I get really bloated, like my pants are a bit tighter than usual kinda thing. Then When Im durring my period I lose some weight, but usualy near the end.
I really only get PMS badly every 3 months or so (I can't explain it, that's just how my cycle works!) --- but I find that when I do actually PMS I get REALLY bloated, sort of weepy, and I eat ALOT.
Last week was one of those weeks -- I think I put on 6 lbs :) But I know it'll dissapear pretty quickly over the next week or so....

I haven't noticed any weight changes, but boy, am I hungry in the week before my period....
This is happening to me right now. I stepped on the scale yesterday and was 3 pounds heavier!!!!!! Then I looked at the calendar and should be getting my period in five days. I am not on any birth control so I really get PMS and typically gain about three to five pounds the week before my period. It is terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But I relief when I realize that is what it is.
PMS seems to heighten my NEED for junk food, I mean unspeakable cravings!! Dr. Pepper with every meal, peanut butter on ANYTHING in the pantry, raiding the kids candy baskets even if the only chocolate is foil wrapped eggs leftover from last Easter, NOTHING, I mean NOTHING is safe! And my weight does go up slightly, but I feel more "inflamed" than anything. The weight usually goes away towards the end of the week and I just get back on track with eating healthy. It's a minor setback every month, but I don't let it completely sidetrack me.
I feel the need to eat everything also flyteemom! Just like you said nothing is safe.....I pick and pick and pick at everything.......I was up .8 when I weighed this week......But I hacked it up to my cycle.....So hopefully I will get it off this week......
I had to go back and find this post because it was soooo frustrating to step on scale this morning (after a week straight of no cheating) to see an overnight gain of 4 lbs. I started today and i'm sure that is the problem but i feel so fat!!!!
i gain up to 10lbs on my period stating from the week before i get it to the week after, and im way more bloated. i do love my salt though, which doesnt help the bloat.
With me I haven't noticed any change at all. I still consistantly lose lbs every week wether i have my period or not. The only craving i get is for chocolate. But i limit myself. I also find that since i started going to the gym everyday, that i haven't had PMS during my peroid. And my cycle only lasts 2-3 days now. The running and weight lifting seem to take off LOT OF stress. Which of course the boyfriend loves!
last week i went up 2 pounds.. i figured it was water since it was a week before my period. well, i got it today and i was down 3 pounds on the scale! i hope this isnt just a mistake. Maybe i was a bit bloated, and now i'm not? Weird!
i dont gain either, i just feel real bloated.
Oh dear! So are you telling me that the weight loss I just rejoiced over yesterday, could be back on when my period is over???? That is just too depressing! I have been trying for 3 weeks and the scales show nothing until yesterday. I thought finally, I was on the right track.
i usually gain a few right before, then it holds tight until it's over, then it goes back down to what it was (or lower if i didn't have my PMS chocolate! :)
2-3 pounds easy...and eating more doesn't help much! I think the worst part of it is the mental changes I go thru every month. The weight gain, even though I know what it's caused by, puts me in such a funk. Then, like magic, it's over! And we begin again...
Thanks for responding everyone.. that does make me feel better to know
that could be the reason for my weight going up and holding so tight
last week.
I just moved into a new house, and someone packed my scale away. I couldn't find it for days, and I was going nuts! (yes, I'm obsessed!) But I finally found it the other day, and although my weight still hasn't moved much, it did go up a little (but it came down a couple this morning). I know I have to be building muscle from all the heavy boxes I've been moving around. I'd better be, for as sore as I am!

I have the weight gain yes, and mine usually lasts 2 weeks - period is often 10 days late too, but I dont know if its water retention or what- my clothes feel lose still so I cant explain why the extra lbs on the scale.
So here I am stuck in a premenstrual zone for 2 weeks weighing 6lb more than I did before. Its very frustrating as I cant monitor progress weekly , even though I know I have significant calorie deficiency to lose over 1lb a week. I havent been calorie counting very long so all i can do is hope this is hormone related.

I seem to either hold steady or gain 2-3 pounds. The week before I have some cravings and I'm much more likely to get upset over dumb little things that I'd normally shrug off. I seem to lose a pound or two after.
I always start a diet when I'm on my period, right after the PMS lifts, so that by the time the next one rolls around, I'm already in the groove of the new plan and it's easier to stick to it. It worked; I continued to lose weight throughout this one and didn't deviate from the plan at all. I did lose a lot slower due to water retention but then afterwards lost two pounds almost overnight, and they're still gone.
