Why are women so terrified of bulking up?

Insight, please?

Because people keep warning us that getting too bulky is unfeminine.  Personally I love the muscular look on woman where the muscles are defined but softened by our normal body fat.  I'm not so much of a fan of the low body fat on women or even on most men, but I have to admire the strength and dedication to achieve it.

Because they might look like this?

Because sometimes women accidentally wake up looking like juiced-out bodybuilders.

And what's wrong with that? Why is that look okay on a man but not on a woman? Why do women have to look weak to feel feminine?

Well.... she's green...

I want to be green and muscley.

i think it's an excuse.

Nah, it's just misinformation perpetuated by bad women's fitness magazines.

"I don't want to bulk up. I just want to tone."

Um... okay? Personally I wouldn't mind bulkier arms.

I'd love more muscle, but I want to trade out some of the body fat...otherwise many of my suit jackets stop fitting. Undecided

agreed.  My sister's think I am CRAZY for heavy lifting while they clip 2 lbs exercises from SHAPE each month.  Can't wait till I am further along in my program and will be able to show them what "bulking up" really looks like on a woman.

They aren't making excuses to not workout.  They do workout quite a bit, just not very efficiently.

I think bulky just sounds bad.  "Long and lean" or "toned" sounds better than "bulky".  I don't want to "bulk up" - I want better looking stronger muscles...so I lift weights.  Go figure.

They associate bulking up with what body builders do.  Most women do not want to look like a male body builder.

Thing is, if they try it, what's the worst that can happen?

I'm more afraid of being weak.

Thank you. What's up with society telling us we should look like sticks? Even worse, BENDABLE sticks.

they could realize that they have wasted countless hours on less efficient workouts and that their little sister, friend, or whoever told them to lift was right all along ;)

I don't run because I might accidentally win a marathon.

I don't read because I don't want to get too smart.

A girl's gotta protect herself, you know? If she's not careful, there's no telling what she might become.

i keep telling my friends i'm lifting so i can bulk up for a fight. heh.

Exactly - can't have women living up to their potential after all. Much safer for the boys if they can undermine that whole "equality" thing by making it seem like becoming all you can be is somehow unfeminine.

The main reason I run is so that I am ready for the imminent zombie apocalypse.  I guess I can apply that to lifting too.  In case I lose my firearms, I need some major upper body strength for head bashing with melee weapons!
