Womens' Fitness Magazines

I'd like to subscribe to a fitness magazine for some light reading and new ideas.  What are your favorites?  Self?  Shape?  Anything else?  I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I subscribe to 3.  Fitness, Shape and Oxygen.  Oxygen is hardcore bodybuilding for women.  Fitness and Shape have general exercise and nutrition ideas.  All three also have websites.

My favorite is women's health.  It has fewer advertisements and good articles and exercise moves.
Can I recommend Muscle With Attitude instead?

wow melkor,

thanks for that link to muscle w/attitude.  i read krista's article on back exercises.  i tried to get to stumptuous.com yesterday, but it didn't work (something wrong w/the site i think).

i'm not sure i can take on her program, but some of the moves look really good.  i like the "power rows" a lot and the straight-arm flies.

Shape and Self and anything like them are not worth the paper they are printed on. If you like seeing the same ineffective routines churned out every week or even better, the perpetuation of ridiculous myths, those are the magazines for you. They infuriate me because women read them thinking they are bettering themselves, then come here and talk about 60 minutes of cardio and the occasional Swiss ball being the panacea to weight loss.

I have to check out this Oxygen, however. I know nothing about it.
OK I hit up the Oxygen forums. Lots of excellent information but according to the members, the magazine itself is a lot like Shape. Thumbs down.
I wouldn't subscribe to Self if you're in it for the fitness.  However, it is a very uplifting magazine ... I definitely enjoy it.
For Women Fitness Rx Magazine. It's much better than Self or Shape or any of the others in my view. I dislike Self Magazine. Ick.  Most women just don't like the pretty little bathingsuit girls on the front cover of the monthly issue. I find it inspirational! Lol

You can go to http://www.fitnessrxmag.com/ to check it out a bit. I don't subscribe to it, but I do buy it every so often. <3
I bought Fitness RX when it was first published.  Great magazine, I can occasionally find it here in England at Borders.  Of course it costs a fortune but worth it.  I believe it's only 6 issues a year.
Huge thumbs up from me for a magazine called OnFitness.  Very good articles, little advertising, smart stuff in general.  This is for serious people, discussing mostly fitness with a bit of well researched nutrition info, too.
Hey thanks for the great tips!!  I KNEW there had to be something better than Self...and I figure the CC community would know - thanks!  I'll check some of these out!
Lol. I agree. I think anything is better than Self Magazine. Yeah, you're right Redkitty it's more expensive and less issues. It's 6 issues a year for $20.95 or $38.95 for two years which is 12 issues. But, there is just so much more content in one than others. Not trying to get you to subscribe though by any means. Pick one up at the store if you can give it a glane over to see if it's something you'd like too. If so, RedKitty and I are in agreement it would be worth it to you.  Let us know.
Don't buy or subscribe to Women's Health, you can join on the website and you get their emails for free, and almost all the features show up in your inbox. That way, you've got nothing to lose, really, but weight.

Yes, Shape, Self, and Fitness (I think it might have been mentioned above) can get a bit repetitive, but I think a subscription to one of them would be great. I find them to be extremely motivating and if your just looking for light reading...

They do offer workout routines (even like Pilates and good stretches) and everything, I mean I never do them because I take group classes at the gym, but I'm sureee they work well. And its not always just exercise, they have healthy, lowfat recipes and other interesting articles not related to fitness. I love them, but I can definately see why some people do not. I just had to defend my favorite magazines.

I got a copy of FitnessRx for Women, and I almost couldn't get past the page after page of soy protein supplements advertised by women who swore to have lost 50 lbs of fat taking the supplement....but once I finally got past the annoying ads, there are some great articles in that magazine with cool science referenced at every turn.  Also, I like the way they assume that their readers are not idiots.  I'll be using their ideas at the gym for sure!!

I'm going to keep looking ofr OnFitness, as their website looked pretty cool.

Thanks for the tips!!
