Really wondering if I have enough time
Okay, so, I've been waiting all summer to begin training for a half-marathon. I couldn't run this summer because I had to bike to and from work everyday ( 90- 100 minutes total) which took all my energy. Anyway, I ran a half-marathon last year, which took 12 weeks of training, and have been running off and on this year.. the last time I did a 10k was sometime in March though.. so it's usually around 5k. I planned to run a half-marathon in 8 or 9 weeks, the latest one is 9 weeks. Is this enough time to train? Or am I in over my head?
Thanks
If the last time you ran at all was March, I don't think you have enough time. At least, if it were me, I wouldn't try to do it, even if you're fairly fit, because of the risk of an overtraining-type injury. If you're currently running, though, it sort of depends on you. Look for half-marathon training schedules online - can you jump into one of those?
If I couldn't get to, say, 10 miles for my long run by following the 10% rule, I wouldn't do it (but then every time I've pushed it past that, I've ended up with some annoying injury that required a couple of weeks off). If you're less prone to injury and generally fit anyway, you might be able to pull it off.
On the other hand, is there a marathon relay associated with any of the 1/2 marathons you're considering? If so, that might be both more fun and more realistic.
Anyway, good luck, and don't hurt yourself! There'll be other half marathons - even if you decide to sign up now, if a month from now you're just not getting the distance you need, it's better to eat the registration fee than suffer through 13 miles!
Well no, the last time I ran was yesterday, haha. I meant, the longest distance I ran probably this whole year was a couple times in March, which was 10k. My usual run is 5km nowadays on the weekends and on any other days off work I get.
I looked on a couple schedules, and apparently I can do the half marathon, but the longest distance I would run beforehand......... would be 12-14 km... which I don't know how I feel about :/... it's no where near the race distance.
Ugh, anyway, thank you for the advice, it actually got me thinking of a few things I overlooked.
i ran my halfs when i was training for a marathon so it just worked into my training. i never trained for a half.
and i run about 25miles a week a half is in one month... i know i can't do it that quick. but with 2 months i'd give it a try if your just doing it for the tee and to do it not for time. since you have an aerobic base and can run 3.1 easily. register late when you know better so your not disappointed if you can't.. bc it isn't a lot of time to train... youll know how you feel ..so start training.
btw isn't a mile running = 3 miles biking so it sounds like you where biking the equivalent of at least a half that should help you! do a base week see where you are then do the 10% increase rule see if that gets you where you need to be.
best of luck
