I'm a big fan of Wonder Light Wheat bread. I'm a white bread lover too, but I reallyreally like this bread.

We eat Natures Own Honey Wheat Light - it's our compromise between the good heavy breads that I like and the lighter ones my kids like.  Give it a try.

I agree with a_mckh, Nature's Own light bread (40kcal per slice) is really good, the options I have over here in Mexico aren't many, I should say, but HEB carries Nature's Own Light Wheat and also Light Sourdough (white bread that my 16 year old sandwich lover brother doesn't pass on), there is also a Bake Shop brand from HEB itself that makes every variety with 45 calories or less per slice.

I am also a fan of the Nature's Own Light Wheat Bread.  Tastes good and can't beat 40 calories a slice.  :D

Orowheat has a Double Fiber bread that also has just 40 calories per slice, and a Double Fiber English Muffin for 110.  Both are very tasty, and the extra fiber is a big plus.

All bread... even the light sort... is carbohydrate.  If you want to get them off white bread try one of the 'half and half' or 'best of both' type which contains some wholegrains but it isn't 100% 'rustic'.  Children need plenty of calories so if you serve them thinly sliced regular bread that would be fine.

i make "sandwiches" with lettuce (bibb or romaine) or cabbage leaves! works great (just use a napkin) and gives the "sandwich" a bit more crunch!

Try Saralee Lite Bread! It's 45 calories a slice and the whole wheat and whole wheat with a touch of honey is delicious! Plus two slices has about 5 grams of fiber! :-)

Martin's whole wheat potato bread-sooo good!

I like Ezekiel 4:9 Bread not because it's low in calories (80 cals a slice), but because it's all-natural and tastes "heartier" than other breads. :) It seems more dense to me.

nimble wholegrain, its 49 cal a slice :)

I am also a fan of Sara Lee light bread. I enjoy the Multigrain and Honey Wheat. I think they might even have a white version.

Try it- its delicious!

I agree with the Ezekiel suggestion.  I used to use the Sara Lee Delightful breads but they DID NOT satisfy me at all.  I would eat 2, 3, even 4 pieces and still not be satisfied.  That landed me around 180 cals.

I am satisfied after having 1 slice of Ezekiel..I've actually never had to have 2 at a time.  It's dense and tasty and better for you too!

I love Trader Joe's Essential Flax Seed Bread. It has 100 calories for 2 slices!

I use Nature's Own White Wheat bread. It tastes, looks, and feels just like regular white bread. But it is only 50 calories a slice.

I think Nature's Own is really expensive here though but i will try it i guess.

when i buy bread i usaully get it at my healthfood store.

SOme good comerical brands are pepperidge farm all natural, arnold all natural, and vermont bread company.

the bread i get from my HFS is usually from berlin natural bakery ( a spelt wheat bakery in ohio) i get thier sprouted flour bread. I also get french meadow bakery, all thier breads are yeast, sweet, oil free sourdoughs. They are like manna for a guy who developed wheat sensitivitys. from them i buy thier spelt, kamut, rye breads.

They are all very very dense and take getting used to if you eat commercial bread, plus they are pricy, but many coupons help with that. i also dont eat bread too too much, so they do last a bit.

but its either that or i feel lousy.

a very good organic bread maker is rudis bakery, they are sold in many super markets and are very very good.

personally i HATE HATE HATE ezekiel bread, plus the soy in the bread usually keeps me away, the texture, is terrible.

www.berlinnaturalbakery.com

(dont have stock in the companys, just a guy who is glad he can eat normal bread agian)

Weight watchers multigrain and Josephs Heart Friendly Oat Bran and Whole Wheat Four Pita
Also like the flat out wraps.

Aunt Millie's whole grain white bread, 2 slices has 120 calories and 5 grams of fiber!

I'm getting on the Nature's Own train.  I remember my mom getting it when i was a little kid and I've stuck with it over the years.

If your kids enjoy toast, try toasting it the first few times they try it, might ease them into it a little more?
