Woops! Only ate 1100 Calories Today

Quote  |  Reply

I was just curious if one day of eating super low calories like 1100 today is bad for your body? I am coming off a one day "cleanse" (6 Apples and a steak for dinner) yesterday, which was only about 900 for the day. I did not know I only ate 1100 until logging my food today! I will increase my intake tomorrow to about 1800 - mostly protein and veggies and good oils for about the next few weeks. I take a mutlivitamin, fish oils, garlic and chewable calcium daily. I also exercised both days - burn Mon about 420, burned today about 600 (can't believe I actually had the energy).

Unfortunately for me, time has dictated that carbs (simple) are not good in any quantity for me. In addition, unless I stick to about 1800 - 1900 calories a day, I either maintain or gain. Go figure for a guy that is 5'9" 230 lbs with a large frame. I know I will get the people out there telling me I do not eat enough. However, I have time-tested my intake abilities and in order for me to reach a goal weight of 190, hopefully! I have to be very strict everyday!

Any thoughts?

amanenti,

We're all different but even 1800 calories a day for a guy your size does sound a bit extreme. I would encourage you to read this book by Tom Venuto.

Among other things, he explains the concept of "starvation mode" that our human bodies can enter when we have too few calories.

Anyway, I applaud you for taking the positive steps of diet and exercise.

Cheers!

I hear what the last poster is saying. I too consume about 1800 calories a day. The biggest issue with a dip like that is the hunger the until you catch up. If you are hungry eat. If your hungry and hour later eat again. Small stuff. I really dont think it's an issue one day though. Many religions have a fasting period where people only eat or drink water. In addition people under medical care waiting for surgery can often go days without food. I'm not saying deprive yourself but the occational dip is ok if you pick it up when your body asks you too.

IMO

I think you should eat only if you feel hungry or if your last meal was small - this will prevent overeating. Calories, if unused, will turn into fat anyway..

If you are coming off of a cleanse, then you shouldn't go immediately back into your normal diet.

I think the guy's lowest calorie intake for a day is 1500 ish?

HOWEVER, that's just a guideline (good one). I mean a person not eating a anything for a day won't hurt really =_= (As I know some of my guy friends just forget to eat sometimes) Just use your best judgment, if you think it was too less, you could actually make up for it the next day.

One off day isn't going to affect your overall progress.  Cleanses don't do anything to promote weight loss in the long term either.  Lots of people fast for many reasons, but it's of no use in losing weight and keeping it off.

ahaha what is this steak and apple cleanse? I thought we'd heard them all by now.

Back in August you said the same thing and you were only about 220. So I don't see where you are getting the numbers from.

So..? he is 230 now, 220 in august. One can put on 10 lbs by december!

i think 1,800 calories is fine!! you is not a tall guy, on tich the heavy side yes...but you are a large frame so it sounds bigger than it really is. 190 is a great weight to be at for you!! as long as you are eating, 1,800 calories is fine. it is a very strict diet for your size but it is doable!!! Heck, im 20 yr old female and im a very small frame, i was at 138 lbs im now down to 129 (got 14 lbs to go) and i've been eating 1,200 calories a day and if i can do it, you can do it!!!

My point is that he has the idea that he is going to gain at over 1800, but he is gaining anyway.  I am acutally the same height and build as he is and even at 155, I won't gain on 1900.  We even have similar exercise patterns. There is just no way that his numbers add up to 1800-1900 calories a day. I have to agree with hammer, starvation mode is likely the culprit.

I think there is a little misunderstanding here. I have fluctuated calories since August - eating 1,800, eating 2,200, eating 2,500 etc... Most of my days since August have not been good eating days - hence the 10 - 15 gain since then. I have calculated some days to be over 3,000 calories too. I beleive in order for me to get to a goal weight of 190 - it will require very strict eating (clean) of no more than 1,800 - 2,000 a day.

Well, it is a little cleanse (one or two days) and it is aimed at ridding the body of excess water, in addition to being a foundation for a more rigourous eating routine than normal. It actually helped me to lose my "sweet tooth" - I have not desired my normal binge food since doing it. I am on day two of my more strict eating plan and have not had the desire to deviate to "bad" foods. Maybe it is a little "mental" thing too.

It is not for the purpose of quick wieght loss as most loss will only be water. I learned about it from a personal trainer freind of mine who has clients do it before starting a "clean" diet.

Heh. Um, steak and apples sound delicious.

Regardless of that, trust me ~ after years of restricting one "bad" food type after another ~ I can assure you that there aren't any "bad" foods. I totally relate to binging and avoiding binge foods, but if you classify them as "bad" it sets you up for guilt when you want them simply because they're tasty.

And then, if you finally eat something you classify as "bad," you'll probably feel bad too! You might even binge out because you're already "Bad" & you "can't" have that food normally, so you might as well get your fill.. then... the cycle begins again. Back to guilt & "bad"ness. That's no good!

It's really hard to cultivate a healthy relationship with food. I struggle with it daily, but I'd rather struggle than be defeated.

Enjoy your steak & apples, consider eating more & focus on a healthy relationship with food.
