I work in a bakery and its ruining my life haha.

I package and frost all sorts of delicious goodies for 9 hours a day 5 days a week.

I have tried really hard not to give into them, but sometimes lil pieces sneak their way into my mouth.

I think it might be screwing with my cravings and my diet.

Time to get a new job? I really like it there......

ideas?

I cant chew gum :( I got my jaw kicked in a concert a few years back and its all screwed up, plus i have nasty tmj......its a strain on my jaw to chew gum and the doc said its a no.

Bring a tooth brush to work and brush your teeth every time you want to eat that cookie.

Don't want to ruin a freshly brushed mouth do you?

(Honestly I have no idea if that's a good idea...it just works for me right before bed to control night time snacking)

I worked in a bakery for one summer.  The only thing I found that kept my mind off the goodies was music, we actually weren't ALLOWED to chew gum. (I guess they were afriad we would drop it in the dough or something, who knows.)  I was all alone in the back singing to the yeast bread all through the early morning.  :)

I can't carry a tune if you wrapped it up nice and put it in a bucket, so my boss made me stop when the customers started coming in of a morning, but everyone was pretty good-natured about it.  You can't sing with your mouth full of bread!
speaking of music ... this thread so reminds me of the song My Mother Was a Chinese Trapeze Artist by The Decemberists!
Could you try Listerine breath strips instead of gum?  They'll put a fire in your mouth and keep it busy!! :-)

Heck, I'm impressed that you actually don't look like a doughnut already. I worked in a cafe for 4 years and after a year I couldn't even look at a muffin, so maybe you will develope an immunity to baked goods, who knows?

Oh wow - working in bakery would be my downfall just because of bread alone...

If you can't chew gum, you might consider just getting some good sugar free hard candies to suck on (to keep your mouth busy), and I've discovered that peppermint (specifically) has been really good at keeping a lot of my "smell induced" cravings at bay.  Except for gingerbread - peppermint can only go so far...Wink

Good luck!

You could suck on no-sugar peppermint candies instead of chewing gum!
This is what I did when I worked in a bakery:  Pretend it is not food.  Seriously.  Just completely put it out of your mind as an option.  Tell yourself, "It is not food." and bring your own lunch, etc.
My very first job was in a bakery.  Wasnt on a diet and I burned out quickly.

People would come in and slowly pick out 1 pink icing, 2 chocolate - no 1 chocolate, 1 chocolate coconut, one lemon filled wait not the pink icing butterscotch ----- ARGH they all taste the same, theyre doughuts !!  Dont feel that way anymore though.
I completely understand- I too have worked in a bakery. It was too easy to take a goodie home at night, or eat the one that wasn't perfect enough for display or broken and still totally edible. Shh, dont tell.
Its good that you are keeping track on caloriecount.com. Try to stick with it! Just think when you go to eat something... "if i eat this, I MUST log it".
Maybe thinking about logging it will make you just eat the sweets once in a while?? You never know.

oh my gosh i would DIE if i worked in a bakery
that's the only reason i didnt apply to work in the king sooper's bakery when they had jobs opened up

bread is my weakness...one bite of freshly baked french bread and im done for
and then there's all those pastries...though i dont care for doughnuts

the one thing that never fails to stop me from eating is brushing my teeth

although once im already started, i never think to stop to brush my teeth...so i suggest to brush ASAP, like right after lunch (or whenever...depending on what time you work)

Well i  work at Tim Horton's and before i started working there i never really liked doughnuts so i didn't think it would be a big deal but i forgot about all the other stuff i liked there and since i get a good discount it doesn't really help.  I'm thinking of looking for a new job myself.   Thank god i  only work there one day a week!
I work at Cookies By Design and I'm not a decorator, I work the front so there are time periods where I have nothing to do but stare at the cookies! I've found only chewing gum works for me usually but... I kind of trick myself, too. We have bite size samples in the front and I only allow myself to have one of those AS IM WALKING OUT THE DOOR because I have it, I arleady ate it and I've left so I can't go back for more. If I eat a piece of cookie whil I'm working it screws up my cravings and I eat more than one. So.. Try not eating any until you are leaving, like a reward for not eating a lot during the day but make it a small piece so you still aren't ruining your day. Maybe that'll help?

If you can't chew gum, what about those little breath strips that dissolve on your tongue? Or altoids, peppermints, etc? Pop those instead of baked goods.

Also I like vunez02's idea of rewarding yourself at the end of the day. With a cookie or half a brownie or whatever your fave thing is there. Encouragement for being "good" all day long.

If you like the job and you're happy there I wouldn't leave. You could be jumping into a way worse situation starting a new job and ending up not happy there for a different reason... just my opinion. (Plus you look quite thin to me, so you can't be eating THAT much at work... are you???)
