Work Trips

Quote  |  Reply

I recently started on my weight loss journey and now I am traveling 4 weeks for work. I will be gone 3-4 days a week going to trade shows and conferences. I am so nervous about not being able to work out and about taking clients out to dinner. I have always been the life of the work trip and now that I am not drinking and losing weight I do not want to turn off my clients. Eeekkk!

Any suggestions?

I totally hear you on this one.  I travel an insane amount (I would guess about 50-60% this year), too.  As hard as it is to maintain a routine at home that allows for successful weight loss, I find it really difficult on the road.

In terms of what drinks to order with clients, you might find this page helpful.  One of my CC friends posted it recently: http://health.blogs.foxnews.com/tag/long-isla nd-iced-tea/

Where I live and travel (Uganda, Malawi, and Rwanda), asking for substitutions on a menu item, or finding veggies that are steamed or raw as opposed to cooked to death in various oils, is quite difficult.  However, depending on where you are, more and more restaurants are getting to be friendlier towards subbing out veggies for fries, and doing a plain, grilled chicken breast.  These are not overwhelmingly exciting when your colleagues are getting more interesting, higher cal versions of things, but it's something to maybe aim for on most nights, recognizing that there may be pressure (internal or imposed) to order something more creative once during the trip.

Although when you're on the road work hours are always more than 8-6, I find that when I make the effort to get up early and go for a walk I do feel better.  There are a host of different apps for the iPhone for in-hotel-room exercise plans, if you have one.  Otherwise, if you do a little google searching you might be able to find some stuff, as well.

I still am trying to get better at each of these things.  It's way easier to tell someone else what do to than it is to do it myself, but I'm working at it.

Good luck to you!
