working at a fastfood restaurant

i got a job at mcdonalds and i thought it would provide a lot of anxiety, like me wanting to eat the foods that were there, and feeling like i would want to binge on it, but surrisingly it has the opposite affect. i never want to ea the food and i never feel hungry while im working. has anyone else gone through this? it just seems kind of weird to me.

When I was in high school I worked at a bakery/deli and I was surrounded by cakes, muffins, tarts, sandwiches. And I know exactly how you feel. After a day or two everything became "an object" I was selling and not tasty food. So I know exactly what you mean. Although now I would see a piece of cake as something tasty :).

It's normal... the more time you spend surrounded by a particular food, the less you want to eat it. I worked in a chinese restaurant when I was in highschool and after six months or so of serving up their banquet, I couldn't face another wonton or lemon chicken for YEARS.

Actually this is probably fairly common...my brother, when I was in High School, worked for a local Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and used to come home wearing the grease it was so bad that for probably 15 years after I couldnt go near a KFC without getting sick....and he was never hungry while working there either....

It's pretty common for people who work surrounded by foods to rather 'go off' them.  However, as you stated in your other post, your problems run rather deeper than that and are more serious.  If you don't find the food you're serving appetising, that's not 'weird'.  But then to go all day without eating anything at all, when you're already severely underweight and keeping yourself very sick as a result.  If you are worried about 'weird'... that is the part to be worried about.

Start the day with a good-size breakfast and turn up for work with a packed lunch with plenty in it.... sandwiches, yoghurts, peanuts, drinks, chocolate bars.... to keep you going.  Plan ahead and give food and mealtimes priority.  Eat your lunch and snacks even if you're not especially hungry.  You don't have to eat the food you serve all day but you do have to eat. That's the only way you're going to stand any chance of recovery.

Good luck

I work in a restaurant and when I'm hungry, I would love to eat the food. When I'm not hungry, I don't care for it. I do get sick of it and crave other stuff, but not often. I guess its different for everyone.

The same, but different:  I worked at a beer store (The Beer Store, for Ontarians), and now I don't drink.  I think seeing alcoholics day in and out made me realise what's going on (to a lesser extent) when I drink.

Maybe you are seeing the same from the big, unhealth people that frequent your McD's everyday??  I could understand how studying the clientel would turn me off a place.

I just got a job in a milkshake chain called Shakeaway. I don't dislike milkshakes, but I don't particularly love them either - and I hate half the ingredients that we use on the menu - but I think the important thing is to be able to SELL the product even if you don't like it yourself. I actually admire someone who can plug something they don't like and make it convincing over someone who can because it takes more skill, to me.

I worked at Jamba Juice and can never ever get anything from there again. It just grosses me out thinking how much sugar is in those things... and the juice and how thick it was. ughh

Yes!  I experienced the same thing when i was working at Six Flags Great Adventure.  Ugh.   One day, I was stuck in the cotton candy stand.   I don't think I've even remotely craved cotton candy since then.  It gets all over you when you're working with it.   Just sickly sugar...  yuck.

They day I worked "The Best of the West" totally turned me off of barbeque for years....  Sad, but true.   Most of the time, though, I was working at the Conestoga Wagon.   Hotdogs and nachos.... yee haw!  ^_^   I never ate them.   Sometimes, they'd put me in the churro stand or the pretzel stand.   Yeah, nothing yummy about churros either.

The only place that made me crave what I was selling was when I was working at the drink cart.  Mmmmm...cold drippy ice, and delicious bottles of water.  Even the powerade looked delicious.   I always wanted to drink the fruit drinks that were in the bottles that were shaped like the fruit.  (Like grape juice in a grapes shaped bottle!)   Looked yummy.
