Working mom, turning 40 this year.

I've never been thin, but I was once happy with my weight, healthy and strong. I gained some weight when I married Mr. Metabolism and began to heap my plate with the same stuff he did. Then came two kids, with moderate gains for each... and it all adds up to about 30 (well, 40) pounds that just shouldn't be floating around my middle.

I turn 40 in September and I'd love to lose 30 pounds by then. (I like the sound of "40 by 40", but I know that's not realistic!) 30 pounds in 4 months is a tall order, but I like challenges.

My problem is that my diet is really not bad, so it's difficult to cut back on empty calories, since I can't just drop sugary sodas or something that would have an instant dramatic effect. I eat (mostly) healthy foods, but I heap my plate too full, and I find it difficult to decrease my appetite. I have an elliptical but it's right next to the couch and after working all day, guess which I head for. That will have to change.

I'm an emotional eater, and I'm also prone to the stealth calories that mommydom brings... finishing my kids' plates of cold hot dog slices, cheese strings, sticky french toast squares and of course lots and lots of crackers. Time to wake up and smell the calories.

Not All Processed Foods Are Created Equal
Fact: a diet containing whole, fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the best for a healthy mind and body. Although true, it can be hard to keep food fresh at home for longer periods of time, and if you have no time to shop every few days, boxed and canned foods become appealing. We often hear about heavily processed frozen dinners and processed foods worth avoiding, but there are minimally processed foods that do pack a lot of nutrition and may be worth having in the fridge or cupboard.
