Working retail & gaining
I just got a second job at a retail store, where I'm standing, stocking, and walking for hours at a time. How many more calories per day should I be eating in order to accomodate this activity into gaining? I assume I'm burning quite a bit more with my four hour shifts...thanks : )
I'm not quite sure how to answer you as I don't know that there is an exact amount to suggest.
I will tell you this: I started working at Wal-Mart, 4-6 hour shifts mostly. Initially I lost a few pounds. I learned that eating an extra PB sandwich before bed and drinking an extra Boost shake while I was on shift seemed to stave off weight loss. I never managed to gain though. So figure I was taking in an extra...500 calories maybe? And that kept me maintaining. Though I suppose I should also tell you I worked second shift and had a tendency to go out and have some fun after work too - so that *probably* added to my inability to continue to gain whilst working there.
You can't be exactly sure how many calories you'll need, but go as a trial and error. Bring a good amount of non-perishable (unless they have a fridge) foods. I would say eat every 2-3 hours. Bring foods like peanut butter sandwiches, juice, granola bars, protein bars, trail mix, nuts, Ensure or Boost Plus, fruit, bagels, etc.
What I would do is add it under the Activity Log and see how many calories you're burning (or at least an estimate).
Here are some examples:
Standing; Light/Moderate - Assemble/Repair Heavy Parts, Welding, Stocking, Auto Repair, Pack Boxes for Moving, Patient Care (Nursing)
Walking - 3.0 Mph, Level, Moderate Pace, Firm Surface
Standing; Light - Bartending, Store Clerk, Assembling, Filing, Duplicating, Putting Up a Christmas Tree, Standing and Talking At Work, Changing Clothes When Teaching Physical Education
So add them as your exercise/activity, then look at your home page & see what your deficit is, or if it's not towards the end of the day yet, add those extra burned calories onto your Burn Meter in your head. If the deficit is too much, or is going to be too much by the end of the day, then eat however many more calories you need. Mmmm...more food!!! lol
What type of food should not be eaten?
Calorie Count does not prescribe a particular diet or tell people to avoid particular foods. We only ask that you eat a balanced diet... Read more
