Workout/Food and Dizzy Spells?

Quote  |  Reply

Hello,

I am needing some info on a couple thing.  Why I am getting dizzy when I get up out of a chair.  I am 38 and 188lbs @ 6'.  My workout and meal routine is very consistant.  I bike 2 miles to a local track and run 8 sprints around the corners of the track and briskly walk the straight aways in between sprints, then i bike the 2 miles home usually at a fairly intense pace depending on how I feel physically.  I normally do this 4 times a week.  I get home from the workout and usually eat kashi oatmeal (2packets) and or a bowl of shredded wheat.  Eat whatever for lunch and then a healthy portioned dinner.  I usually do light weight training throughout the week as well...pushups, dumbell exercises but nothing to intense.  Am I running to much, or not eating enough.  It does not happen everytime I get up, but it does happen several times a week.  What type of diet (calories)should I be on with a workout like this.  Should I change my workout?  Less, More, Different excercise routine??

I can answer the dizzy part... well as far as i know it can be caused by a few things.. yours sounds like low blood pressure... as you get up the blood doesnt have time to catch up with your head, lack of blood and oxygen to your brain makes you dizzy.. i have the same proble.. try getting up slower and let us know how that works

Generally, I have gotten dizzy spells (due to low blood pressure) when I am extremely fatigued.  That is generally due to lack of sleep rather than overexertion.

The description of your diet is fairly vague but indicates a high carb diet.  You want to make sure that you are getting sufficient protein in your diet -- say 95 grams/day minimum.  You might want to try adding canadian bacon or beef jerky to your breakfast.  You might even want to go to ham and eggs or something similar.

Well, from what I have read and responses from others with similar symptoms it seems like the dizzy spells are somewhat normal for people that have a low resting heart rate as you were saying.  As far as my diet, I get close to 95 grams of protein.  I add a protein/fiber supplement to my oatmeal in the morning which gives me about 50 grams just for breakfast.  My lunches are normally out to eat...Wendy's, Chick Fila, Mexican food.  I would not call it a healthy lunch, but no sodas, and I try not to eat fry's.  Dinner is usally chicken, pork chops, etc., with veggies, potatoes etc.  My only real concern with my diet is that I may be getting to much sugar.  Since I have cut out sodas all together I tend to have a lot of sweet tea, and I am now hooked on Starbucks(Fivebucks) and the high sugar coffees.  Do you think it could be related to sugar and or caffiene?  I do seem to totally crash after lunch, say around 2:00pm.

Well, your diet sounds okay.  I don't believe that the low-resting heart rate should be a problem.  Mine is around 50, which is pretty low and light headedness like that is very unusual for me.  I also drink too much coffee so I wouldn't expect caffeine to be a problem.

Good Luck.
