This workout High everyone feels...

Quote  |  Reply
I just never feel it, I feel exhausted, completely drained, the only reason I workout is because I force myself not because I feel such great gratification after I do one. Am I the only one that feels like crap after a workout? Im not sure if its because of the type of workout im doing maybe its not the right way of going about it.

I just hear all the time on here about how everyone feels so wonderful after a workout like its some empowering thing. I do my workouts for weightloss but not because im loving it........I do 2 days of cardio mainly powerwalking for about 45 mins. I do 3 days of conditioning exercises consisting of jumpingjacks, pushups, situps, lunges. I sometimes hit the gym for the exercise bike and the stepper if im at the gym I also do some of the weights.

Should I mix this up differently to feel this high? input would be great

thanks

The Runner's High, or Workout High is due to an internal chemical called Endorphins. Working out releases endorphins which will temporarily dull your pain and can lead to a state of euphoria, however.. it's not a magic chemical. If you're feeling blah, bored, depressed, etc... Endorphins won't make you magically better. They're only an internal chemical that can help push your mindset in that direction.

Because it's an internal chemical, it's also possible your receptors aren't working right, or that the producers (if that's the correct term) aren't producing right. If you're worried, maybe you can see if a doctor can help check that.
Thanks HK, I might talk to my doc about it. It kinda makes things harder on me because I dont enjoy my workouts like a lot of ppl seem to do so therefore I dont wanna put forth the effort sometimes. I mean I push myself really really hard to stay on track of my exercise. This is harder for me than controlling my cals I can tell you that. Apparently as you said my endorphins are not kicking in................
It might be the specific sort of workout too.

Like.. I really love running. There's something about that that works for me. But.. put me on the Stairclimber and I'm booooooooooored. You couldn't PAY me to enjoy that.

Maybe switch it around and find something you enjoy too :) Dance Classes or Kickboxing or some such :)

I dunno why, but I can see you getting into Kickboxing. :)

Yes try to change your workouts. Some people like different workouts better. Som people are walkers some runners an some like yoga and some like boxing. Find what works for you.
ha ha HK u might be starting to get to know me! I used to kickbox often until I was advised by a doc to stop because of some health issues in the past. I think I would be able to get back into it unfortunatly they dont have the classes offered in my area like they used too =(

I might try the boxing class though they still offer that one.....

If you are making workouts feel like "work" then you need to find something else to do that will be more pleasant and fun.

I don't get a high after working out I too feel exhausted sometimes - but I enjoy my workouts and look foward to hitting the weights and cardio class.  I do like the way it destresses me and makes me more relaxed when I get home after work - but I don't feel energized.  I miss walking so much but I have shinsplints so bad now that makes walking impossible.  But I loved putting on my headphones tuning out the world and tuning into my music and taking a nice walk.

I hope you can find something you can enjoy and start to experience all the benefits of exercise - even if its just the feeling of having done something for yourself!!!

All I can tell you is that I feel the same way. I love to dance, but things like running and other stuff make me feel horrid. I just keep pushing through cause I want to loose the weight. I don't think that experiancing that is so strange. If working out felt so good, more people would do it ;-)

Funny to hear then about me:

I like/love to run 5k races. But if not in a race, I have never been able to enjoy, or even grasp a hint of motivation to go run outside, on trails - anywhere. Except on my home treadmill.

 How weird it that?

I've tried to take my treadmill stint to the gym, and somehow I just can't get settled in - i'm not familiar with the control panel, the speeds, I can't read the display well w/out glasses and can't wear glasses there - I would end up losing them. It always seems there's one thing or another wrong with the ear buds, the ipod something. Or, my towel falls off the display and onto the belt and jams something. Or my hair is in my face. The last time I ran at the gym: I forgot to wear my sports bra, so my bra straps kept falling out from under my shirt. The shorts that I wore were evidently too big and they kept falling lower and lower and i had to keep pulling them up.

This, or other similar things happen to me when try to run in public. Once I went trail running without a rubber band and a half empty water bottle.

I guess I'll never get that love for running  being embarassed is not fun.

I find I enjoy a workout a lot better if I'm doing it with someone else. A lot more laughter involved. Really makes me feel great at the end.
I guess my "I feel great" feeling after a workout is from the fact that I got a great workout in. I never feel a "high" of any sort...and I'm always exhausted (that's the point, isn't it? :-D ), but I feel proud that I worked out, and my motivation is in the results I see.

Mixing things up though is always a good thing -- like I think a few people said, maybe you'll end up finding something that's a great workout and that you also enjoy doing.
Yeah, it all depends on the workout for me.  I only really get the high if I've been pushing really hard in a cardio sort of exercise.  Spin and road cycling get me everytime, which is probably why I'm getting addicted to my bike.  It's in my car right now, calling me...
